Kutztown Storms Past Cheyney on Senior Night

Box Score

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown University's Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) scored a team-high 19 points on Senior Night to lead the Golden Bears past Cheyney 74-47 in PSAC East play.

Wood was one of four members of the KU women's basketball program honored in a pregame ceremony.  Also recognized were forward Steph Zewe (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley), student assistant coach Kelly Sharr and team manager Janee Braxton.  Zewe was one of the PSAC's leading rebounders last season before her 2012-13 season was wiped out by injury.

The Wolves trailed by just six early after a free throw by Lachelle Miller made it 16-10 with 8:29 to go in the first half.  A layup by Natalya Lee (Feasterville, Pa./Rancocas Valley Regional) 22 seconds later started a 21-4 run to close the half.  Aly York (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) had eight of her nine first half points during the spree that sent the Golden Bears in the locker room ahead 37-14.

Kutztown held Cheyney to just 2-of-15 shooting over the final 8:16 of the first half and only 5-of-28 during the first half (18 percent).

Another 21-4 run opened the second half as the Golden Bears stretched the lead to 40 points after a pair of free throws by Arianna Apostolopoulos (Yonkers, NY/Ursuline) made it 58-18 with 12:27 to play.  Wood scored eight points in the run.

She finished 6-of-10 from the floor, 2-of-4 from three-point range and 5-of-6 from the foul line.  Wood also had six rebounds and three assists in the contest.

York came off the bench for a career-high 15 points.  Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, PA/Northampton Area) scored 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting and led the team with nine rebounds.  Lee added 10 points and seven rebounds.

Kutztown limited the Wolves to just 28 percent shooting in the game.  Miller scored a game-high 20 for Cheyney, but hit only 7-of-24 field goals.

The Golden Bears converted 25-of-33 from the foul line in the game (76 percent).  Cheyney went to the free throw line just 13 times, making seven (54 percent).

KU held a 49-38 rebounding edge.

With the win, holds a two game lead on West Chester with two games to play, sealing at least the fourth seed in the PSAC East.  Should KU win out, coupled with two losses by Shippensburg, Kutztown would hold the edge for the third seed.

Kutztown travels to Bloomsburg for a noon tip off on February 23.
