Box Score KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown University's only senior,
Micah Fraction (Macungie, PA/Montrose Christian) reached 1,000 points and matched a career-high with 35 points, but a hot shooting Cheyney team spoiled Senior Night at Keystone Arena 102-79.
Fraction, who was honored in a pregame ceremony, scored at least 30 points for the third straight game and the sixth time in the last 12 contests. The PSAC's leading scorer hit 5-of-11 three-point attempts on the evening and went 14-of-17 from the foul line.
The Wolves, however, shot 59 percent in the contest and had a 35-point effort of their own from Jason Sabb. Sabb hit 15-of-20 field goals and added six rebounds and four assists.
Kutztown opened the game with a 14-4 run fueled by nine points by Fraction. After
Kenny Battle (Philadelphia, PA/Imhotep Charter) gave the Golden Bears a 10 point lead less than five minutes into the action, Rashaad Slappy scored to begin a Cheyney comeback. With 10:21 to play in the half, Darius Collins sank a three for a 19-17 Wolves lead.
Both scores were part of a 31-8 Cheyney run as KU went into the intermission trailing 46-36.
Kutztown chipped away at the lead to open the second half as Fraction and Tracy Peal combined to score the Golden Bears' first 18 points of the half. Fraction pulled KU within two, 56-54, with 14:37 to play.
Sabb halted the run with a jumper and the bucket started a 19-5 Cheyney run to put the game out of reach.
Peal finished with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting and led the team with seven rebounds. He hit his only three-point attempt of the game and nailed 4-of-5 from the line.
Battle chipped in with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting.
Tyler Brooks (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) had eight assists.
Kutztown sank 8-of-19 three-point attempts in the contest (42 percent) and 21-of-28 from the charity stripe (75 percent).
In addition to Sabb's big night, Deshawn Curtis netted 20 points. Slappy finished with 15 points and Collins added 14.
The Wolves outrebounded Kutztown 41-28 in the game.
Kutztown finds itself one game behind Shippensburg, Bloomsburg and Mansfield for the final playoff spots in the PSAC East. The Golden Bears can earn as high as the fourth seed or miss the playoffs depending upon the final two games of the season.
KU heads to Bloomsburg for a 2 p.m. tip off on Saturday, February 23.
