Pins Ignite Golden Bears in Senior Night Victory

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Back-to-back-to-back pins to start the match gave No. 12 Kutztown an insurmountable lead as the Golden Bears toppled East Stroudsburg 36-11.

Before the match, Kutztown honored its three seniors – Vinny Campanile (Stanhope, NJ/Lenape Valley), Ricky Pena (Reading, PA/Reading) and Mitch Voelker (Shoemakersville, PA/Schuylkill Valley).

The bout at 125 appeared headed for a decision win, but in the third period, Tony Farace (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) pinned Anthony Marino at the 6:35 mark for a 6-0 KU lead.

Kutztown's next two pins came in less than two minutes total.

Brandon Davis (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) had the Golden Bears' fastest fall of the season at 133, putting Nick Kaiser on his back in just 25 seconds.  Evan Yenolevich (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh (Edinboro)) followed with his quickest pin of the year in 1:18 against Devin Holmes at 141.

After Voelker accepted a forfeit at 149, Matt Martoccio (Kintnersville, Pa./Council Rock South) kept Kutztown rolling with a 10-4 decision at 157 to give KU a 27-0 lead midway through the match.  Voelker's win was his 10th on the year, while Martoccio notched his 15th in his first season in the Maroon & Gold.

The Warriors began chipping away after that with wins by Braden Turner, Brendan McKeown and Luke DeLuise in the next three bouts to cut the deficit to 27-11.

Kutztown's two nationally ranked wrestlers were credited with wins to end the match. Campanile, No. 8 at 197, outlasted Tyson Searer 1-0 and Ziad Haddad (Orefield, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic (North Carolina)), rated sixth at 285, accepted a forfeit. Haddad's win was his 20th of the year.

The win gave the Golden Bears 11 dual wins on the season, the most since KU's school record of 17 in 2009-10.

Kutztown will seek its 12th win on Friday, February 15 at Shippensburg.  After that, the Golden Bears host the Division II Super Regional on February 22-23 at Keystone Arena.
