Box Score EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Kutztown University freshmen
Natalya Lee (Feasterville, Pa./Rancocas Valley Regional) and
Arianna Apostolopoulos (Yonkers, NY/Ursuline) combined for 35 points and the Golden Bears were a perfect 14-for-14 from the foul line in overtime as KU defeated East Stroudsburg 76-65.
Lee picked up her first career double-double and set career-highs in rebounds and assists. She scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to go along with six assists.
Apostolopoulos doubled her previous career-high by scoring 18 points in the game. The point guard went 7-of-12 from the field and 4-of-8 from three-point range. She added six rebounds and five assists.
Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, PA/Northampton Area) added 11 points, while
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) had 12 rebounds and two blocks.
Kutztown trailed 52-50 in the second half, but a layup by Bonenberger tied the game with four minutes to play. Apostolopoulos twice gave Kutztown a four-point lead down the stretch, but the Warriors fought back each time. Free throws by Ryann Fiascki trimmed KU's lead to 58-56 with 1:35 to go. Then, with only seven seconds to go, Jessica Martin sent the game to overtime tied at 58-58.
ESU scored first in the extra period, on a bucket by Fayloa Moise with 4:40 to play, but after that it was all Golden Bears. Apostolopoulos tied the game 18 seconds later.
Kutztown was fouled in seven of its last nine possessions and sank all 14 free throws to close the game on an 18-5 run.
Kutztown finished the game 23-of-30 (77 percent) from the foul line, while the Warriors went just 10-of-20 (50 percent).
In the first half, East Stroudsburg had jumped ahead 22-10 on a three by Barb Borst with 9:18 left in the opening period. Still trailing 27-16 with 6:40 to go after Kelsey Murray scored for the Warriors, The Golden Bears ended the half with a 16-5 run. Kutztown trailed by just one, 33-32, at the intermission as
Avery Hodgson (Surf City, NJ/Southern Regional) scored six of her eight points during the run.
Fiascki and Andrea Veres each scored 13 to lead ESU and Martin added 10 points. Moise paced the Warriors with 11 rebounds.
KU turned up the defense at halftime and held East Stroudsburg to just 11-of-42 during the second half and overtime (26 percent).
With the win, Kutztown remained tied for fourth in the PSAC East with West Chester. The two teams are 10-7 in the division, two games behind Shippensburg, Millersville and Bloomsburg. Those three squads are tied atop the East standings with 12-5 marks.
Kutztown hosts the Golden Rams in a key divisional contest on Feb. 13 at 5:30 p.m. at Keystone Arena.
