No. 3 Kutztown Falls in Pitcher's Duel

Box Score

PEMBROKE, N.C. – An RBI double by Maria Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) in the bottom of the seventh brought No. 3 Kutztown put the tying run in scoring position, but Francis Marion escaped without further damage to win 2-1 at the UNCP Invitational.

Mary Kociencki (Columbia, N.J./Sparta ) was a hard luck loser, allowing just one earned run in seven innings.  She scattered five hits and two walks, striking out a pair.

The Patriots got on the board with single runs in the first and sixth innings.  In the first, Carly Madigan had a run scoring single. Madigan scored Francis Marion's second run, on a base hit by Olivia Zielinski.

KU broke through in the seventh.  Colleen Smith (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip (Hofstra)) doubled a 3-1 pitch to centerfield.  Jessica Kurtz (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) entered to pinch run and moved to third on a ground out.  Isgro stepped to the plate and fell behind 1-2 before ripping an extra base hit to left center to drive in Kurtz.

Taylor Luff kept Kutztown off balance, holding the Golden Bears to three hits.  She allowed just one run and fanned 12.  She also hit a batter.  At the plate, she was the only batter for either team with a multi-hit effort, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.

In addition to hits by Smith and Isgro in the seventh, Katie Lynch (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) also had a base hit and Krista Schauder (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) was hit by a pitch.  Lynch singled to lead off the fifth inning, but the Golden Bears were unable to capitalize.

Kutztown will look to rebound at the Catawba Invitational with five games on Feb. 22-24.
