Complete NSCAA All-Atlantic Region Team
KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Forward
Sam Costello (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and midfielder
Diana Malanga (Lavallette, N.J./St. Rose) of the Kutztown University women's soccer team have been selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) / Continental Tire All-Atlantic Region Team, released Tuesday evening.
Costello earned first team honors, while Malanga was named to the second team. Costello is now on the ballot for All-America honors. Both players were named to the NSCAA All-Region Second Team last season.
Costello started all 20 games for the Golden Bears, leading KU to 13-7 record and to the second round of the NCAA Regionals, where it won an NCAA Tournament game for the first time in school history. She earned her second consecutive NCSAA All-Region and All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) honor this season, as she led the Golden Bears with 11 assists and netted six goals.
Her assists are a career-high, rate third in the PSAC, and are tied with Kim Kelty's 2007 season as the most assists in a season for a Golden Bear. Costello led the PSAC with 72 shots, averaging 3.6 per game. She will return for her senior season in 2014.
Malanga has started in 37 of her 39 games played in her two-year career. Her tremendous durability in the midfield earned her a second all-conference honor in as many seasons in the Maroon and Gold. She scored three goals this season, including the game-winner in Kutztown's 2-0 NCAA Tournament victory over West Chester.
As a team, Malanga helped the Golden Bears rate second in the PSAC with an average of 1.95 goals per game, and working for a league-leading 112 corner kicks.
