EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Four players recorded six or more kills and the team posted its second-best hitting performance of the season as the Kutztown University women's volleyball team earned a 3-0 road victory over East Stroudsburg University on Tuesday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division contest at Koehler Fieldhouse.
The Golden Bears (12-16, 6-11 PSAC) won their second straight 3-0 match; however, all three of the sets against the Warriors (6-24, 2-17) were very tightly contested. Kutztown won the first and second sets 25-20, and the third set 25-21.
As a team, Kutztown hit for a .278 percentage, its second highest of the season. Its top performance of the year was against Charleston when it held a .383 percentage. Against the Warriors, Kutztown had 36 kills to 11 attack errors.
Offensively, numerous hitters had impressive performances. Junior
Danielle Van Buren (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) had eight kills on 12 attacks with one error for a .583 percentage. She also had six block assists.
Senior
Nicole Brumbley (Oxford, PA/Oxford) hit .455 with six kills on 11 attacks with one error. Sophomore
Audrey Stringer (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) posted a team-high nine kills on 18 attacks with five total blocks and just one error.
For the season, Stringer is having a career season in her second year in the Maroon and Gold. With her nine kills on Tuesday night, she moved over the 300-kill mark with 305 this year. It is the most kills for a Golden Bear since a pair of 400-kill hitters in 2007. With 30 more kills, Stringer will begin to move her way up the Kutztown single-season record book.
Setting up Stringer this season has been starting freshman setter
Anna Conti (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City). Conti added 28 assists on Tuesday night to improve her season total to 897. She rates ninth in school history for assists in a season, and can move up to eighth with 37 more assists.
Conti's season mark ranks third amongst Kutztown freshmen in school history, as Katie Herman in 2003 (1,074) and Austin Kinney in 2005 (1,229) are the top two freshmen setter performances.
Junior
Chelsea Braga (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach (Fairleigh Dickinson)) had seven kills with a team-high 12 digs to round out the top attacking quartet for Kutztown.
East Stroudsburg was led by Abby Welch, who had 14 kills but committed 10 attack errors. Shannon Hillsinger added eight kills, and Maddie Hutchison was the top defensive player with 14 digs.
The Golden Bears look to build on their latest winning streak and prepare to take on the top team in the East on Friday night on the road. Kutztown takes on Shippensburg University on Friday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. Kutztown fell to Shippensburg in five sets at Keystone Arena earlier this season.
