Three Goals Not Enough as Field Hockey Falls to Mansfield

Box Score

Mansfield 5, Kutztown 3 (HTML Box Score)

MANSFIELD, Pa. — Anna Behm (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) scored a pair of goals, but it was not enough to climb over the Mountaineers of Mansfield University as the Kutztown University field hockey tea suffered a 5-3 setback this afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup.

Lacy Croasdale opened the scoring in the 21st minute when the Mountaineers (4-9, 1-6 PSAC) gained possession of the ball in KU's defensive circle, and fired it past the Golden Bears (5-7, 2-4 PSAC) goalkeeper. Taryn Schawillie added a cushion to Mansfield's 1-0 lead, when she netted a goal 10 minutes later to boost MU to a 2-0 advantage.

Behm notched her fourth goal of the season when she drilled the ball past Mansfield's goalkeeper in the 32nd minute off of her own rebound. The Mountaineers strengthened their lead to 3-1 at the end of the first half.

Behm's determination and intensity coming into the second half led her to put Kutztown on the board once again. In the 47th minute, Behm registered her fifth goal of the season when Jamie Koenig (Springtown, PA/Palisades) found Behm and she pounded the ball into the back of the cage to cut the deficit to 4-2.

The Mountaineers responded nearly three minutes later when Brianna Velepec forced the ball past KU's goalie. Megan Tiwold (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) would put Kutztown on the board one last time off an assist from Koenig in the 59th minute to close out the scoring.

Mansfield outshot Kutztown 24-12, and KU had 12 corners to Mansfield's five.

The Golden Bears look to regroup and focus on their next game against fourth-ranked West Chester University on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. for a PSAC matchup.
