Kutztown Falls to No. 16 IUP

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Despite a career-high 20 points from Abdul King (Philadelphia, PA/Constitution), No. 16 Indiana (Pa.) outlasted Kutztown 70-62.
 
It was the second straight night King went for a career-high after pouring in 18 points against California (Pa.).  Against the Crimson Hawks, he hit 5-of-9 field goals and went 9-of-11 from the foul line.
 
Ryan Connolly (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, the second of his career.  Anthony Butler (Chester, PA/Archbishop Caroll) netted 11 points and Tracy Peal reached double figures with 10.
 
Kutztown shot 53 percent from the field in the game, including 59 percent in the second half.  IUP overcame the hot shooting Golden Bears by committing just six turnovers all night. 
 
IUP got a game-high 23 points from Marcel Souberbielle in the winning effort.  Souberbielle hit 8-of-12 field goals and went 4-of-5 from behind the arc.  Scooter Renkin turned in a nice all-around game with 13 points, five rebounds, six assists and three steals.
 
Kutztown led early, 15-12, after a pair of free throws by Mamadou Diakite (Philadelphia, PA/Constitution) with 10:39 left in the first half.  The Crimson Hawks scored the game's next 10 points, including back-to-back threes by Renkin and Souberbielle to take a 22-15 lead three minutes later.
 
KU pulled within two points on two different occasions down the stretch in the first half before IUP took a 33-26 advantage into the break.
 
In the second half, Kutztown trailed by just three after a pair of free throws by Butler made it 44-41 with 12:27 to play. IUP responded with and eight point spurt to build the lead to double digits for the first time all evening, 52-41 less than four minutes later.  From there, the Golden Bears could not pull within seven points for the rest of the evening. 
 
 
Kutztown held a 31-27 advantage on the glass, but the Crimson Hawks outscored KU 16-13 in second chance points. 
 
The Golden Bears will look to get back in the win column when they travel to Edinboro on January 11.  PSAC crossover play concludes the following day against Slippery Rock.
