Kutztown Moves into Second Place Tie in PSAC East

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team used a pair of second half runs to hold off Mansfield in PSAC East action, 63-59.
 
The win moved the Golden Bears into a three-way to for second place in the division standing.  KU has a 9-5 mark against PSAC opposition and both Shippensburg and Millersville possess identical marks.
 
Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) poured in a game-high 17 points to lead KU.  She hit 7-of-17 from the floor added four assists and three steals to her night.  Natalya Lee (Feasterville, Pa./Rancocas Valley Regional) had a nice all-around effort.  She scored 10 points and led Kutztown with both six rebounds and seven assists.  Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) shot 5-of-7 to finish with 10 points.
 
Mansfield's Julia Stevenson scored the first four points of the second half to take a 30-27 lead with 18:57 to go.  Kutztown tightened the defense and did not allow another Mountie point for over five minutes. 
 
Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, PA/Northampton Area) cut the Golden Bear deficit to just one point and a layup by Wood put KU on top 31-30 with 18:12 to play.  Wood scored four more points during the run as KU jumped ahead 40-30 with 14:01 on the game clock.
 
MU fought back and eventually tied the score at 51-51 with 6:34 to play, but Kutztown embarked on a 10-2 run to take a 61-53 lead with under three minutes remaining in the contest on a three-point play by Bonenberger. 
 
A free throw by Mansfield's Katie Fitzpatrick shaved KU's lead to 61-59 with 32 seconds to play. After an offensive rebound after a missed second free throw, Fitzpatrick missed a jumper.  Bonenberger hauled in the rebound and Kutztown sent the ball ahead to Campbell, who iced the game with an uncontested layup with three seconds left.
 
Stevenson led Mansfield with 16 points and grabbed seven boards.  Jen Mater added 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while Alyssa Derichie netted 11 points.  Fitzpatrick dished out eight assists.
 
Kutztown committed just 11 turnovers in the game and turned 19 Mountie miscues into 22 points and held a 14-0 advantage in fast break scoring.
 
The Golden Bears have a chance to move up in the conference standings when they host first place Bloomsburg on Feb. 2 at 1 p.m. at Keystone Arena.  The Huskies hold a one-game lead on KU, Shippensburg and Millersville in the PSAC East standings.
