NEWBERRY, S.C. – No. 7 Kutztown University was dominant in three victories at the Super Region One Duals hosted by Newberry, taking down Ohio Valley, Anderson and No. 20 Ouachita Baptist on Saturday.
RESULTS
KU improved to 9-4 on the year and scored the team's third win over a nationally ranked opponent this season. Kutztown outscored its three opponents at the regional duals 114-22.
The Golden Bears started the day with a sweep of all 10 bouts against Ohio Valley in a 47-0 win.
Kutztown picked up four bonus wins and were also awarded three forfeit wins.
Cameron Kirby (Clarksville, MD/River Hill) was credited with a pin in 6:32 at 133. At 157,
Matt Martoccio (Kintnersville, Pa./Council Rock South) notched a win by fall in 1:34 over Eli Stewart.
Two KU wrestlers won by major decision.
Evan Yenolevich (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh (Edinboro)) shut out Nick Varazashvili 11-0 at 141 and
Giovanni Ortiz (Reading, PA/Reading) was a 12-3 winner at 184 over Nicco Niday.
Jackson Stabile (Lenhartsville, Pa./Hamburg),
Matthew Cosgrove (Paulsboro, NJ/Paulsboro) and
Vinny Campanile (Stanhope, NJ/Lenape Valley) also won bouts against the Fighting Scots. Stabile was an 8-1 winner against Tyler Green at 149, Cosgrove defeated Kobina Henriques 7-2 at 174 and Campanile blanked Chase Long 2-0 at 197.
Joseph Byers at 125,
Justin Heller (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) at 165 and
Ziad Haddad (Orefield, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic (North Carolina)) at 285 won by forfeit.
The Golden Bears continued rolling against Anderson in the next session with a 40-6 win.
Nick Lamoreaux (Bethesda, MD/Milton Hershey) notched an 8-2 win at 125 against Gregory Williams to put KU ahead early, but KU trailed 6-3 before winning the final eight bouts to cruise the team win.
Mitch Voelker (Shoemakersville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) at 149 and Haddad at 285 won by fall. Voelker pinned Dennis Rhodes in 1:35, while Haddad's win against Zachary Newton took 1:21.
KU received back-to-back technical falls from
Wade Rivera (Orefield, PA/Parkland) and Ortiz. River won 18-0 at 174 against Jacob Allen, one more point than Ortiz needed to end his match early against Zackery Farmer.
Martoccio,
Andrew Wesner (York, PA/Central York) and Campanile all won by decision. Martoccio won at 157 by a score of 5-3 against Kevin Johnson. Wesner, in his only bout of the day, scored a 10-4 victory over Jamal Lackey. Campanile was a 4-2 victor at 197 against Scott Richardson.
Yenolevich won by forfeit at 141.
The Golden Bears capped the afternoon with a 27-16 win against nationally ranked Ouachita Baptist.
KU trailed 16-15 before Campanile won by fall to seal the victory for the Golden Bears.
Campanile took 1:24 to defeat Seth Calvert. Haddad followed with a win by forfeit.
Ouachita Baptist led 4-0 when
Brandon Davis (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) pinned Anthony Melillo in 3:27 to give KU a two-point lead.
The two teams continued to trade bouts over the next four weight classes. Volker's 6-2 decision over Sterling Hawkins gave the Golden Bears a 9-7 lead after 149. After OBU reclaimed the lead, Martoccio pinned Dexter Carter in 3:21 for a 15-10 Kutztown advantage.
Ouachita Baptist won decisions at 174 and 184 before Campanile's match-winning pin.
Kutztown also had several wrestlers in action at the Messiah Open in Grantham, Pa,, led by
Brandon Parker (Norristown, Pa./Norristown Area) and
Brandan Clark (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) with fourth place finishes.
Parker posted a 4-2 record with three pins on his way to fourth at 165.
Jon Germany (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) joined him in the 165 bracket, advancing to the semifinals before settling for sixth.
At 285, Clark had two wins by fall and posted a 4-2 record during his fourth place effort.
Kutztown travels to Millersville on Feb. 6 for a dual match.
