Kutztown Wins Third Straight, Tops Cheyney

CHEYNEY, Pa. – Kutztown University used a 12-0 run in the second half to erase a three-point second half deficit en route to a 61-51 win at Cheyney in PSAC East women's basketball.
 
The victory was KU's third straight as the team maintained its tie for second place in the division.  Kutztown is 8-4 in PSAC East play, tied with Millersville, one game behind first place Bloomsburg.
 
The Golden Bears shot 36 free throws in the contest, while the Wolves attempted only 12.  KU got three Cheyney players to foul out and Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, PA/Northampton Area) scored all 11 of her points on from the charity stripe.
 
Bonenberger and Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) dominated the inside for Kutztown.  Bonenberger went 11-of-12 from the line and led the team with eight rebounds and two blocks.  Campbell scored a team-high 15 points on a blistering 7-of-8 shooting. 
 
Natalya Wood also reached double figures for the Golden Bears with 12 points.
 
The Wolves took a 35-32 lead with eight minutes to play after a pair of free throws by Kyra Hines-Allen.  Kutztown got a second chance basket from Campbell on its next possession and trimmed the deficit to one-point.  The sophomore forward had six points during the Golden Bears' 12-point run that gave KU a 44-35 lead with 5:10 remaining. 
 
KU led by at least five for the remainder of the game, stretching the advantage to double digits in the game's final minute. 
 
The first half was a see-saw battle with the biggest leads of the half coming in the opening six minutes of play.  Cheyney opened the game with a 5-0 lead, but the Golden Bears responded with a 10-0 run and led 10-5 after two foul shots by Bonenberger with 14:26 to play.  The rest of the half featured 10 ties or lead changes, with a pair of Lee free throws breaking a tie and sending Kutztown into the locker room with a 22-20 lead.
 
The two teams combined to shoot just 33 percent in the second half, but both squads heated up in the final 20 minutes.  Kutztown hit 42 percent, but also got to the foul line 26 times, making 18.  Cheyney tried to stay in the contest by hitting 55 percent from the floor in the second half.
 
The Golden Bears turned 29 Cheyney turnovers into 28 points.  Lee and Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) had three steals apiece and Bonenberger and Campbell each had two.
 
For the Wolves, Hines-Allen scored a game-high 18 points and Lachelle Miller netted 11 points. 
 
Kutztown stays on the road will search for its fourth straight win with a game at Millersville on January 26 at 1 p.m.
