Box Score WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Kutztown returned to PSAC East action, but fell 73-59 at West Chester.
The Golden Bears trailed by just two, 46-44, after free throw by
Micah Fraction (Macungie, PA/Montrose Christian) with 16:33 to play. West Chester responded, however, with an 11-2 run that put the Golden Rams up 57-46 after a layup by Jon Breeden.
Kutztown fought back to within six after a dunk by
Tyler Brooks (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) with 10:54 remaining made it 57-51, but West Chester rebuilt its lead to double digits, where it stayed until KU made a late run.
Trailing 65-52 with 6:54 on the clock, the Golden Bears scored seven straight points to cut the lead to six, 65-59, after a pair of free throws by Fraction. That was as close as KU would get, however, as West Chester pulled away down the stretch.
Fraction scored 17 points to lead Kutztown. Tracy Peal had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. He also had three steals. Brooks had a solid all-around effort with nine points, eight rebounds, five assists, a block and two steals.
Reserves Troy Hockaday and Shannon Givens led the way for the Golden Rams. Hockaday scored 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting and grabbed nine boards. Givens added 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
Neither team shot particularly well in the contest. West Chester shot just 41 percent from the field and 28 percent behind the arc. Kutztown struggled to a mark of 30 percent from the floor and 24 percent from three-point range.
The Golden Bears used a 23-of-30 mark from the foul line to stay in the game, while West Chester attempted just 16 free throws on the night, making 10.
Kutztown returns to Keystone Arena after a three-game road trip when KU hosts East Stroudsburg on January 19.
