KU Defense Stifles Edinboro

Box Score

EDINBORO, Pa. – Kutztown University turned in its best defensive effort 2010 as the Golden Bears stymied a dangerous Edinboro squad in a 46-40 win for KU.

The win marked the second straight victory for Kutztown over a squad at least receiving votes in the WBCA Division II Top 25.  The win over the Fighting Scots, who are receiving votes in the most recent poll, comes after a 68-62 win over an IUP squad that was ranked 12th at the time.

The game was a defensive struggle from the start, as KU took a 20-17 lead into the half.  EU clawed back in the second half and led 25-22 after a jumper by Laurel Lindsey with 14:36 remaining in the game.

Buckets by Natalya Lee (Feasterville, Pa./Rancocas Valley Regional) and Arianna Apostolopoulos (Yonkers, NY/Ursuline) and a pair of free throws by Tanejha Smith (Allentown, PA/William Allen) swung the score back in favor of Kutztown, 28-25 with 12:29 left in the game.

The Fighting Scots twice tied the score after that, including a layup by Aignee Freeland that made it 30-30, but Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape)'s free throw with 9:36 to go gave the Golden Bears the lead for good.

Campbell turned in her third straight double-digit rebounding effort and her second double-double during that stretch.  The sophomore filled the stat sheet with 10 points, 12 rebounds, two assists, two blocks and three steals.

Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) was the only other Golden Bear in double figures in the defensive battle.  She scored a team-high 12 points.

Samantha Blazetic had a double-double for Edinboro with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Lindsay poured in a game-high 13 points.  Kiara Brown led all players with five steals in the game.

Kutztown flustered the Fighting Scots into just 24.6 percent shooting, matching the team's best effort of the season. The 40 points allowed, meanwhile, were the fewest for a KU opponent since holding Washington Adventist to 39 points on December 9, 2010.

The Golden Bears take the court in search of their third straight win on January 12 at Slippery Rock as the complete PSAC crossover action.
