Box Score EDINBORO, Pa. – After the teams traded buzzer beaters in regulation and the first overtime, a last second shot for the win did not fall for Kutztown, allowing Edinboro to defend its home floor in an exciting 78-77 double overtime win.
Kutztown mounted a feverish comeback just to send the game into overtime. A layup by EU's Will Marrow put KU down 67-56 with 4:42 to play in regulation. The Golden Bears, however, closed the second half with a 13-2 run, culminating in a buzzer beater by
Micah Fraction (Macungie, PA/Montrose Christian) to force extra action.
In overtime, Kutztown took a 73-71 lead after Fraction sank two free throw with 2:17 to play. But Xavier Churnac sank a layup with one second left to send the game to a second overtime.
The Fighting Scots scored the first five points of the ensuing period, but Fraction continued nailed a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 78-75 with 1:46 to go. A layup in the closing seconds by
Mamadou Diakite (Philadelphia, PA/Constitution) pulled the Golden Bears within a point, setting up a dramatic finish. Johnathan Logan turned the ball over for EU, giving Kutztown a final chance. KU got the ball to Fraction for a jumper, but the shot did not find the bottom of the net as Edinboro held on.
Fraction led four Kutztown players in double figures with 26 points, but the Fighting Scots got 44 combined points from Isaiah Prince and Bryan Theriot in the winning effort.
Fraction hit all 10 of his free throw attempts on the evening and also dished out a team-high five assists.
Tyler Brooks (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) had a big night in his return to the lineup from injury, scoring 15 points to go with nine rebounds, four blocks and three steals.
Ryan Connolly (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) sank four threes on his way to a 16-point effort for the reigning PSAC East Player of the Week, and
Abdul King (Philadelphia, PA/Constitution) added a dozen points.
Prince led Edinboro with 23 points, while Theriot pitched in with 21 and had game-highs with 13 rebounds and five blocked shots.
While Kutztown did not have its best shooting night in the game, hitting just 34 percent, the team went 18-of-21 from the foul line and turned the ball over just 15 times.
The Golden Bears will look to get back into the win column on January 12 when they travel to Slippery Rock for a 7:30 p.m. tip off.
