Box Score KUTZTOWN, Pa. – In a game that lasted three hours and 45 minutes due to numerous lightening delays, the Kutztown women's soccer team was edged by LIU Post, 2-1. Senior
Crystal Zerbe (Myerstown, PA/Tulpehocken) scored the lone goal for the Golden Bears on a penalty kick in the second half.
Kutztown failed to convert seven shot opportunities in the first half, while the Pioneers took advantage of what they got. 15 minutes into the game, the Pioneers' Alexa Niciforo got them on the board as she collected a turnover and scored from 25 yards out into the top left of the goal. Hanna Westerling scored the second goal for LIU Post as she kicked in a loose ball in front of the net at the 30:51 mark.
In the second half of action, the Golden Bears came out and blanked the Pioneers in the shot category, recording six to LIU's zero. After a foul in 64th minute, KU was rewarded a corner. From the corner, another foul was called in the box to give the Maroon and Gold a penalty kick at 64:46 where Zerbe scored the only goal of the contest for KU.
With 19:49 remaining in the game, it was delayed due to lightening in the area. After waiting more than an hour, the players came back on to the field finish the final 20 minutes. Kutztown put together a few chances, including three corner kicks but could not find the back of the net as it fell 2-1.
The Golden Bears held an advantage in shots, 13-3, and tallied five corner kicks to LIU's three.
Nicole Fierro got the win in net as she stopped a total of five shots, while junior
Casey Behrendt (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) recorded the loss with one save.
The Golden Bears will return to action on Tuesday when they play host to Lock Haven at 3 p.m.
