Box Score MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Kutztown University field hockey team fell to Mansfield 4-1 Saturday afternoon in their first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division game.
Mansfield set the tone for the entire game when Brianna Velepec made the first goal with an assist from Kristyn Grunza in the first two minutes of action.
Although the goal was followed by a rain of shots by the Golden Bear's
Emily Labowitz (Bala Cynwyd, PA/Lower Merion) and
Erin Reynolds (York, PA/Central York), and corner kicks by
Samantha Jacobson (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville), Mansfield made their second goal in the 16th minute by Kristy Tutorow, with an assist by Grunza and Velepec.
Played from the outside circle,
Jenna Gregory (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) made the first and only goal for Kutztown in the 20th minute with an assist by Labowitz.
The Mountaineers opened the second half with an abundance of shots, scoring the third goal of the game at 43:48 by Velepec with an assist by Tutorow.
Kutztown took the offensive advantage for the next twenty minutes of play, but did not manage to find the back of the net.
In the final minute of play, Mansfield's Taryn Schawillie made the fourth and final goal of the game.
The Mountaineers held the advantage in shots with a total of 24. KU's goal keeper
Karly Waltman (Birdsboro, PA/Twin Valley) ended the game with 12 saves.
Gregory led KU with 6 shots, and the Golden Bears ended the game with a total of 18 shots.
The Golden Bears continue PSAC play on the road when they travel to Millersville on Tuesday, September 11, for a 4 p.m. start.
