Field Hockey Opens the 2012 Season with Victory Over Bellarmine, 3-2

Box Score

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – On a rain soaked field Sunday afternoon, No. 7 Kutztown University came from one goal down to start the 2012 season with a win over Bellarmine, 3-2. Junior Erin Reynolds (York, PA/Central York) scored the game-winner with under three minutes to play in regulation, grabbing KU's first victory.

The Knights gave everything they had, taking a one goal lead into the 50th minute of play before the Golden Bears took advantage of a few second half opportunities.

Senior Emily Labowitz (Bala Cynwyd, PA/Lower Merion) broke a scoreless tie 20 minutes into the game when senior Jenna Gregory (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) found her on the right side of the net to bury the game's first goal. From there, the Knights regrouped and came out firing after halftime as Alexis Van Wallenhen netted two quick goals, taking a one-goal advantage.

The Maroon and Gold settled down and started playing its style of hockey, getting off seven shots in the final 15 minutes. The comeback started from a turnover in the Knights end when Gregory found junior Jamie Koenig (Springtown, PA/Palisades) to knot the score at two with 14:36 to play.

The game-winner would come with just under three minutes left in regulation. Reynolds converted a penalty corner from Labowitz, for her first goal of the season and third game-winner of her career. Bellarmine threatened late, getting two shots on goal but senior Karly Waltman (Birdsboro, PA/Twin Valley) stood tall in net, making two stops in the remaining minutes, sealing the win for KU.

Bellarmine hung tough on the afternoon, matching Kutztown's 15 shots in the wet weather, while KU held an advantage in corners, 13-3.

Getting the win between the pipes was Waltman, posting eight saves, while Bellarmine's Paris Bryant stopped five shots in the losing effort.

With the loss, Bellarmine falls to 1-2 on the year as the Golden Bears start the season on the right foot, winning their first game.

The women will stay in Louisville, Ky. on Monday and return to play when they take on Lindenwood University at 11:00 a.m.
