Box Score 2 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. – Kutztown University's women's volleyball team traveled to Shepherd University for the PSAC/WVIAC Challenge on Friday and completed the day undefeated.
The Golden Bears lost their first set to Fairmont State (25-18) and won the second set 25-22. The winning advantage was then volleyed back and forth, with a loss for KU in the third set (25-21) and another win in the fourth set (25-23).
The fifth set kept the audience on the edge of their seats as the Golden Bears and the Falcons both reached 15 points. Kutztown wanted it more, however, and won the game 17-15.
Kutztown used a dominant defense at the net to pick up the win as the Golden Bears tallied a school record 29 total blocks in the match.
Nicole Brumbley (Oxford, PA/Oxford) and
Brianna Risch (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville) both reached double figures. Risch had six solos among her 12 blocks, while Brumbley had 11 blocks, including four solos.
Danielle Van Buren (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) added nine blocks, while
Chelsea Braga (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach (Fairleigh Dickinson)) added six.
Chelsea Braga (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach (Fairleigh Dickinson)) dominated the court with a 9 kill lead and 6 blocks.
Brittany Harman (Hanover, PA/South Western) was the dig leader for the match with 15 digs.
Kutztown opened their second match of the day against Concord with wins in the first two sets (25-19, 25-21) but the Mountain Lions seemed to be warming up as play went on.
The Golden Bears fell to Concord in the third set (25-23) and appeared to be beat in the fourth (25-15). Refusing to let the victory slip through their fingers however, KU recovered and won the fifth set 15-13.
Emily Heppler (Newtown Square, PA/Marple Newtown) ended the game with 33 digs, followed by Braga with 17 and Harman with 16. Senior setters
Dana Wright (Warminster, PA/Saint Basil Academy) and
Kimberlee Gomber (Washington, PA/Washington) made a combined total of 32 assists, setting up Braga to lead KU with 8 kills.
The Golden Bears return for day two of the PSAC/WVIAC Challenge with a game against Fairmont State at 1:30 p.m. and a game against Shepherd University at 7:30 p.m.
