Field Hockey Falls in Double Overtime Thriller to Seton Hill, 4-3

Box Score

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's field hockey team could not hold on to a two-goal lead as it fell in the second overtime of a thrilling game, 4-3, at University Field on Friday afternoon. Three different Golden Bears registered goals in the contest.

Falling behind by an early goal from Seton Hill's Lauren Schumacher, Kutztown bounced back to score three unanswered. Senior Jenna Gregory (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) put the Golden Bears on the board when junior Erin Reynolds (York, PA/Central York) found her off a corner to tie the game at the 12:31 mark of the first. Keeping the momentum, Reynolds netted a goal of her own at 26:56 when freshman Rayann Fink (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) found her in front of the net to bury the team's second goal as it carried a 2-1 advantage into halftime.

The Golden Bears went back to work in the beginning of the second half, scoring their third goal from junior Elly Skinner (Prompton, PA/Honesdale) as she ripped a shot from 12 yards out at 40:18. Goals from Schumacher and Joanna Pichardo knotted the game at 3-3 for the Griffins as the tying goal came with under 10 minutes on the clock. KU was awarded two penalty strokes in the final 90 seconds of play but failed to convert as the scoreboard read, 3-3, at the end of 70 minutes.

The Golden bears outshot Seton Hill, 9-4, including a third penalty stroke in the first frame of extra time but could not score the game-winner. In the second overtime Seton Hill took advantage of a break away as Ashley Reid got the game-winning goal four minutes into the session.

Kutztown was awarded three penalty strokes in the contest but Autumn Reid of Seton Hill was up to the task, stopping two as the other rattled off the left post.

KU outshot the Griffins, 37-28, and had 21 penalty corners to Seton Hill's six. Seton Hill's goalkeepers combined to make 22 saves in an attempt to quiet Kutztown's attack.

Picking up the loss for KU was senior Karly Waltman (Birdsboro, PA/Twin Valley) who made 10 saves, while Reid got the win, posting 15 saves of her own.

The Maroon and Gold will return to action on Saturday when it hosts Indiana University of Pennsylvania on University Field at 1:00 p.m.
