Tournament Homepage

KU's Samantha Derr (Lititz, PA/Warwick) (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and the Bobcats' Hillary Perez-Ashley were locked in a pitchers' duel until the fourth inning.  With the teams in a scoreless tie, Jacqui Omichinski doubled to left center with one out.  Kaitlyn Carey followed with two-run homer to give West Virginia Wesleyan a 2-0 lead.

From there Derr allowed just one more hit to the Bobcats, but Perez-Ashley limited the Golden Bears to just three hits and a walk on the afternoon.

She had retired 11 straight before Kutztown's Kelly Fitzgerald (Upper Darby, PA/Archbishop Prendergast) (Upper Darby, Pa./Archbishop Prendergast) led off the seventh with a single.  Derr walked with two outs to bring the potential winning run to the plate, but Perez-Ashley struck out the next better to end the game.

Before the seventh, KU's best chance to score was in the second inning when Morgan Booth (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) reached on a bunt single and moved to second on a wild throw with one out.

Derr threw seven innings of two-run ball, allowing only five hits and a walk.  She struck out just one batter, but induced 10 ground ball outs.   At the plate, she was KU's only hitter to reach base more than once with a hit and a walk to her credit.

For the Bobcats, McCullough was the only player on either team to collect more than one hit.  She was 2-for-3 with two singles, but never made it past first base either time.  In fact, West Virginia Wesleyan only had a runner in scoring position on two occasions the entire game.

With the loss, Kutztown will need to beat the Bobcats twice on May 12 to advance to the NCAA Division II Softball Championships in Louisville, Kentucky on May 17-20.  First pitch in game two is set for 1 p.m. on May 12 at North Campus Field.  Game three, if necessary, follows at 3:30 p.m.
