SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Shippensburg closed the game with a 7-1 run to break open a close game and defeat Kutztown 15-7 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference women's lacrosse.
The Golden Bears (3-7, 0-5 PSAC) trailed just 8-6 after a 5-1 run of their own capped by a goal by
Leeann Pica (Levittown, PA/Neshaminy) (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy) with 19:39 to play in the game.
The Red Raiders (6-3, 2-2 PSAC), however, answered with back-to-back goals by Garrie Grenfell to start the game changing run.
Shippensburg had used a five-goal run in the first half to build a 6-1 halftime lead.
Megan Schwar (Alpha, NJ/Phillipsburg) (Alpha, N.J./Phillipsburg) led KU with three goals in the contest, including two on free position shots.
All but two of the Golden Bears' goals came off of free position attempts as Kutztown went 5-of-9 from eight meters.
Krystine Beodeker (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley) scored both of her goals on free position attempts and
Gina Carmina (Flanders, NJ/Mt. Olive) (Flanders, N.J./Mt. Olive) scored on a similar attempt.
Pica had six ground balls and six draw controls.
JoAnn McLaughlin (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape) (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape) had seven ground balls and three caused turnovers in goal to go along with five saves.
Lauren Hauck had a game-high five points with three goals and two assists for Shippensburg.
Ali Cross stopped 11 shots for the Red Raiders.
KU held a 16-8 advantage in draw controls, but was outshot 29-24.
The Golden Bears return home to host Millersville on April 5 at 4 p.m. in Kutztown's Lax 4 Life contest.
