Golden Bears End Season With 66-61 Win Over Shippensburg

Box Score

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (February 25, 2012)—Freshman Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) (Mount Laurel, N.J./ Lenape) scored a career-high 17 points to lead the Kutztown University women's basketball team to a 66-61 win over Shippensburg University in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) regular season finale at Decker Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Bears (8-20 overall, 6-16 PSAC) overcame a 26-22 halftime deficit to slide by the Red Raiders (14-12 overall, 11-11 PSAC).

In their last meeting, the Red Raiders defeated KU 73-57 at Keystone Arena. However on Saturday Kutztown had a completely different mentality that utilized complete team efforts.

Kutztown's second half was sparked by a shooting spree where it shot 60 percent from the field. Campbell was 7-for-12 from the field and also added a block and steal in Saturday's win. Campbell has shown strong progression coming off the bench during the year and has developed into one of KU's promising players.

A much improved shooting half for KU allowed two other Golden Bears to finish in double figures in scoring. Following Campbell's 17 points were sophomores Avery Hodgson (Surf City, NJ/Southern Regional) (Surf City, NJ/ Southern Regional) with 12 and Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, PA/Northampton Area) (Walnutport, Pa./ Northampton) with 10.

Junior Steph Zewe (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) (Lewistown, Pa./ Indian Valley) finished with a team-high 10 rebounds and added nine points. Zewe has averaged 9.1 rebounds this season and collected 254 boards on the year.  Junior Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) (Limerick, Pa./ Spring-Ford) also collected ten rebounds along with three assists.  Kutztown's post players also did a great job as it scored 24 points in the paint to Ship's six.

The Golden Bears also played a great defensive game, beating Shippensburg 47-32 on the glass.

After seven lead changes and three ties in the second half, Kutztown finally took control of the game with eight minutes, 32 seconds when Campbell drove to the basket for a layup to put KU up 49-47 where it would never trail again.

With just 55 seconds remaining, Shippensburg used a jumper from Sarah Strybuc to pull the game back in 63-61. However that would be the Red Raiders' last basket as KU used trips to the charity stripe to push the game out of reach.

Strybuc led Shippensburg with a team-high 15 points. Monae Baker recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Shawna Wert and Dana Wert finished with 13 and ten points, respectively.

Kutztown accomplished it's mission to win its final game of the 2011-12 season. KU's youthful squad has hopes of promise and will look to return 14 players for the 2012-13 season.
