KUTZTOWN, Pa. (February 23, 2012)—
The Kutztown University women's basketball team is gearing up for its final regular season contest of the 2011-12 season when it visits Shippensburg University for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division contest on Saturday, Feb. 25. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at Heiges Field House.

The Golden Bears (7-20 overall, 5-16 PSAC) fell to the Red Raiders (14-11, 11-10) earlier this season, 73-57 at Keystone Arena. Shippensburg leads the all-time series, 31-17. The Red Raiders clinched the No. 4 seed in the PSAC Playoffs and will face either Bloomsburg University or West Chester University in a quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday, Feb. 28.

In its last contest, Shippensburg defeated Millersville University 60-54, while KU fell to Mansfield University, 62-59.

Kutztown's season has been filled with ups and down but its youthful squad is promising and has hopes of finishing the year strong with a win.

Recently, sophomore Avery Hodgson (Surf City, NJ/Southern Regional) (Surf City, NJ/ Southern Regional) has been producing solid numbers in scoring for the Golden Bears.  After her freshman year of never starting in a game, the 5'11" forward has transformed and flourished into one of Kutztown's most consistent players.

Hodgson has scored in double figures 15 times this season and is second on the team in scoring (10.6). She is currently shooting 44.9 percent from the field, the best of any Golden Bear. She is also second on the team in rebounds, grabbing 5.5 boards per game. She leads the team in blocks (27) which ranks 11th in the conference (1.0/game).

Additionally, Hodgson's precise efforts at the free throw line have landed her second in the PSAC in free throw percent (85.7). Hodgson's all-around talents on both sides of the ball have been more than beneficial to the Golden Bears this season.

Junior guard Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) (Limerick, Pa./Spring Ford) leads KU in scoring, averaging 13.6 points per game. She also leads the team in assists (85) which is 14th in the PSAC. Wood led Kutztown in scoring against the Red Raiders with 17 points in the first matchup. Sophomore Andrea Sisson (Richmond, VA/Godwin) (Richmond, Va./ Godwin) also chipped in 14 points. Sisson is shooting 40 percent from the 3-point range and is fifth in the PSAC in 3-pointers made (2.3). Additionally, Sisson is averaging 10.8 ppg.

The Golden Bears were unable to stop SU's Monae Baker who finished with a game-high 34 points and 16 rebounds in their last matchup. Baker is Shippensburg's leading scorer, averaging 14.8 ppg. She also leads her team in rebounding (9.4) which is third in the conference. Ship has three players averaging double figures in scoring in Shawna Wert, Sarah Strybuc, and Dana Wert who are all pulling in around 11 ppg.

Junior Steph Zewe (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) (Lewistown, Pa./ Indian Valley), KU's defensive leader, will have to be effective on Saturday to tackle Ship's offense. Zewe is fourth in the PSAC in rebounding (9.0), right behind Baker.

Kutztown's bench played an integral part in its last game with Shippensburg as it outscored it 16-2.

Saturday will be the final game for seniors Brittany Greaves (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) (Malvern, Pa./ Great Valley) and Brittany LeVan (Centre Hall, PA/Penns Valley) (Centre Hall, Pa./ Penns Valley), ending their four year stint in the maroon and gold. Kutztown expects to return 14 players for the 2012-13 season.
