Kutztown Men Looking to Head into Playoffs with Win over Shippensburg

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's basketball team has already secured its place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) playoffs.  However, it is still playing for a chance to play in front of its home fans in the postseason.  A win on Saturday would guarantee that.

KU travels to Shippensburg University on Saturday, Feb. 25 for the finale of its regular season in an Eastern Division matchup at Heiges Field House.  Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.

With a win, Kutztown (17-8 overall, 14-7 PSAC) would enter the playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the East.  With a loss, it is possible that KU could be the No. 3 seed and play on the road in a quarterfinal match.  Bloomsburg (18-8, 14-7), West Chester (16-9, 13-8), and East Stroudsburg (16-11, 12-9) have each clinched a spot in the playoffs.

KU and Shippensburg (10-17, 7-14) have split their season series the past two years, but have a chance at the season sweep on Saturday.  KU took down the Raiders, 83-56, on Feb. 1 that stretched KU's season-long winning streak to ten.

The Golden Bears have responded well after posting three consecutive losses.  They have won three in a row and are coming off their 13th double-digit victory of the season.  They defeated the Mountaineers of Mansfield, 77-66, Wednesday night and had four players finish in double figures in scoring.

Shippensburg one-upped Kutztown by placing five players in double figures in its 81-70 win over Millersville on Wednesday.  The win snapped a two-game skid for the Raiders.  They shot 58 percent from the field and a season-high 89 percent from the free throw line.

KU senior guard Nate Edwards (Philadelphia, PA/North Catholic) (Philadelphia, PA/North Catholic) led all scorers with 20 against Mansfield on Wednesday.  He is having a career season with the Golden Bears and is fourth in the PSAC in scoring (18.6).  Edwards is also second in steals (2.1) and fifth in free throw percentage (.856).  In the first matchup with Ship, he dropped 11 and grabbed three steals.

Junior guard Micah Fraction (Macungie, PA/Montrose Christian) (Macungie, PA/Montrose Christian) scored a career-high 31 against Ship.  He was 14-of-20 from the field and had one of his best offensive performances of the season.  He is averaging 15.4 points per game, good for 14th in the conference, and is coming off a 19-point effort against Mansfield.

Senior forward Eric Brennan (Chester, PA/West Catholic) (Chester, PA/West Catholic) has a team-leading 11 double-doubles on the year and is second in the East in rebounding (9.5).  Brennan rounds out the quartet of double-digit scorers and is 18th in the league in scoring (13.6).  He brings a little bit of everything to the table for KU.  He has 83 assists on the season and is tied for first in the PSAC in assist/turnover ratio (2.0).

Senior guard Devon McBride (Richmond, VA/Hill School) (Richmond, VA/Hill School) returned to the lineup on Wednesday and scored 11 points off the bench.  He is KU's top scorer this season and is currently second in the conference (20.3).  He is third in 3-pointers made (58) and fifth in percentage from beyond the arc (.430).  KU leads the PSAC in scoring offense (82.4).

Senior Will Royal leads the Raiders and, along with four other seniors, will play his final game of his collegiate career on Saturday.  He is averaging 11.9 points per game and is seventh in the PSAC in rebounding (7.6).  As a team, Shippensburg leads the PSAC in field goal percentage (.491).  Also averaging in double figures is Dane Lauber (11.4), Jordan Stasyszyn (11.2), Craig Von Scyoc (10.3), and Dylan Edgar (10.1).  Edgar was the only player to score in double figures for the Raiders the last time they played Kutztown (10).

The opening quarterfinal match of the PSAC East playoffs will be on Tuesday, Feb. 28.  Despite the location still being unknown, tipoff will be at 7 p.m.
