Box Score

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (February 22, 2012)—The Kutztown University women's basketball team placed three players in double figures in scoring despite falling 62-59, to Mansfield University in a rousing Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division matchup at Keystone Arena on Wednesday evening.

The Golden Bears (7-20 overall, 5-16 PSAC) were led by sophomore Avery Hodgson (Surf City, NJ/Southern Regional) (Surf City, N.J./ Southern Regional) who finished with 16 points. Hodgson was 5-for-13 from the field and 6-for-6 from the line. She also added two assists for KU.

It was Hodgson's layup with one minute, 55 seconds remaining that cut Mansfield's lead to 58-54. The Mounties quickly responded with a jumper from Alyssa DeRichie but a pair of free throws from Hodgson sliced MU's advantage to 60-57 with 43 seconds left.

Mansfield's Mallory Moore would take advantage of the charity stripe as she nailed two buckets with 31 seconds remaining, giving the Mounties a five point lead. However with 24 seconds left in play, junior guard Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) (Limerick, Pa./ Spring Ford) hit a jumper as KU trailed 62-59.

Following a KU timeout, freshman Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) (Mount Laurel, N.J./ Lenape) made a great defensive play, allowing her to steal the ball from MU' Monique Webly for one last KU possession. Campbell swung the ball out to sophomore Andrea Sisson (Richmond, VA/Godwin) (Richmond, Va./ Godwin) for a 3-pointer that fell slightly short at the buzzer.

Wood and junior Steph Zewe (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) (Lewistown, Pa./ Southern Regional) each finished with 10 points for the Golden Bears. Wood recorded a team-high five steals and three assists. Campbell recorded nine points and five steals.

The Mounties used the glass to their advantage as it recorded 55 rebounds to KU's 37. Mansfield also placed three players in double figures in scoring.

The Mounties were led by Moore who scored 18 points and tallied 13 rebounds. Moore was 7-for-17 from the field. DeRichie recorded 11 points and Julia Stevenson finished with ten points and nine rebounds. Jena Matter scored nine points and added 13 boards for the Mounties.

Mansfield took a 32-26 lead at intermission following a first half that featured nine lead changes. Following a breakaway layup from Campbell that tied the game 11-11 with 11:56 remaining, KU went on a 7-0 run to push it to a 21-11 lead with 7:40 left. The Mounties used a 7-2 run of its own that lasted over five minutes to take the lead back, 25-24 with 2:27 left.

“I think we came out a little flat in the first half,” Hodgson said. “It came down to the last stretch, where we had a chance but it just didn't go our way. The next game we're going to go out and give it our all and hopefully win.”

Kutztown will travel to Shippensburg University on Saturday, Feb. 26 for its final PSAC East Division contest of the regular season. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
