KUTZTOWN, Pa. (February 21, 2012)—The Kutztown University women's basketball team will host its final home game of the 2011-12 season when Mansfield visits Keystone Arena for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division contest. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
The Golden Bears (7-19 overall, 5-15 PSAC) are coming off a split during last week's conference play. Kutztown started off the week with a 72-59 win over Cheyney University on Wednesday but fell to Bloomsburg University, 69-50 on Saturday.
The Mounties (9-15 overall, 6-14 PSAC) suffered consecutive losses as it dropped a close 62-59 decision to the hands of Bloomsburg on Wednesday. On Saturday Mansfield fell to Millersville University, 66-45.
During its last matchup with the Mounties, Kutztown wasn't able to walk away victorious as Mansfield clinched a 81-69 win at Decker Gymnasium. Mansfield is averaging 65.2 ppg while KU is bringing in 60.8 ppg.
Junior guard
Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) (Limerick, Pa./ Spring-Ford) scored a game-high 24 points in KU's last outing against the Mounties. Wood sank 8-of-19 field goals, including 2-of-5 on threes, and went 6-of-7 from the foul line. She leads the team in scoring (13.8 ppg), assists (82) and steals (34). Wood was one of three players with four steals over the Mounties, along with
Keyla Pullen (Richmond, VA/Monacan) (Richmond, Va./Monacan) and
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape).
Also averaging double figures in scoring for the Golden Bears are sophomores
Avery Hodgson (Surf City, NJ/Southern Regional) (Surf City, N.J./ Southern Regional) and
Andrea Sisson (Richmond, VA/Godwin) (Richmond, Va./ Godwin). Hodgson is pulling in 10.6 ppg, while Hodgson is recording 10.4.
Against Mansfield, the Golden Bear bench played a huge role as it outscored MU's bench 26-14.
Kutztown's defensive efforts forced the Mounties into 28 turnovers. Junior
Steph Zewe (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) (Lewistown, Pa./ Indian Valley) who was recently named PSAC East Athlete of the Week has led KU on the glass all season. She leads KU and is second in the conference in defensive rebounds (7.6) and fourth in overall rebounding (9.2).
Mansfield found its groove against Kutztown as it placed four players in double figures, with two recording double-doubles in its last meeting. Senior Mallory Moore led Mansfield in scoring with 19 points. Moore is second in the PSAC in scoring (18.7) and free throw percentage (85.7). She also leads the conference in steals (3.1).
Marrysa Moyer and Julia Stevenson each added 15 points for the Mounties. Additionally, Moyer and Stevenson finished with 12 and 11 rebounds respectively. Stevenson is the only other Mountie averaging double figures in scoring (10.4). Jena Matter also recorded 13 points in MU's win over Kutztown.
Defensively, Moore and Moyer are grabbing seven rebounds each per game.
Kutztown will conclude its regular season when it heads to Shippensburg University on Saturday, Feb. 25 for a PSAC East Division game beginning at 1 p.m.
