The Golden Bears honored five seniors before the matchAnthony Frost (West Reading, PA/Wyomissing) (West Reading, Pa./Wyomissing), Zach Marlatt (Slatington, PA/Northern Lehigh) (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh), Desmond Moore (Easton, PA/Easton) (Easton, Pa./Easton), Victor Montanez (Prospect Park, NJ/Passaic County Tech) (Prospect Park, N.J./Passaic County Tech) and Eric Sergent (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area HS) (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth).

“This is a good group of guys two of them are captains for me – Desmond Moore (Easton, PA/Easton) and Anthony Frost (West Reading, PA/Wyomissing),” head coach Robert Fisher said.  “I couldn't get Anthony in the lineup tonight, which hurts.  But we were able to get Eric Sergent (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area HS) in the lineup at heavyweight giving up about 75 pounds and still nearly won.  That was really fun.  It was one of the highlights of the night, actually, seeing him try like crazy to win giving up 75 pounds.”

Not only was the win KU's seventh in a row, but it also gave the team at least 10 dual victories for the sixth straight year.

“This a great win,” Fisher noted after defeating the No. 7 team in Super Region I. “What's really nice is we're really, really on a roll heading into the regional tournament.  It's really nice, the guys are still wrestling well and I'm pumped.”

Moore got the action on the mats started with a 5-3 decision over Colten Keck for a 3-0 Golden Bear lead.  It was the senior's 15th win of the year and was the first of five victories for KU to open the action.

After Evan Yenolevich (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh (Edinboro)) (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) accepted a forfeit at 133, Leonard Drummond (Easton, PA/Easton) (Easton, Pa./Easton) made it 12-0 after defeating Simon Rice 9-2 at 141.  Jackson Stabile (Lenhartsville, Pa./Hamburg) (Lenhartsville, Pa./Hamburg) earned his second straight win with a 7-4 decision at 149 to extend the lead to 15-0.

Bionojel Candelaria (Reading, Pa./Middletown) registered the first bonus win of the night, a 10-0 major decision against John Lindquist for a 19-0 lead.

Neil Grudi and Luke Wetter won back-to-back decisions for the Raiders at 165 and 174, respectively, but Giovanni Ortiz (Reading, PA/Reading) (Reading, Pa./Reading) put the win away with an 8-1 decision at 184.  The win over Tyler Zittle gave Ortiz 15 wins on the year.

Vinny Campanile (Stanhope, NJ/Lenape Valley) (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley) continued to make short work of opponents, pinning Keith Dahlheimer in just 33 seconds. It is the 13th win by fall of 2011-12 for the sophomore and something he aims for each time he takes the mat.

“I love being able to come out and pin someone,” Campanile stated after the bout.  “It helps the team and it's six points.  Everyone's happy when you come out with six points.”

An undersized Sergent fought hard at 285 despite a noticeable size difference between he and his opponent, falling just 1-0 to Jacob Nale.

After the match was over Campanile credited the team's win streak to hard work.

“We've really stepped it up in the (wrestling) room,” he said.  “When that happens and you're practicing hard it shows on the mat.  You wrestle how you practice.”

Kutztown looks to keep rolling at the NCAA Super Region I Championships at UNC Pembroke on Feb. 24-25.
