CHEYNEY, Pa. (February 15, 2012)—The Kutztown University women's basketball team ignited a 20-5 run to start the second half, cruising it to a 72-59 victory over Cheyney University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division game, Wednesday evening at Cope Hall.
The Golden Bears (7-15 overall, 5-11 PSAC) placed four scorers in double figures as junior
Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford) led the charge with a game-high 21 points and five assists. Wednesday was Wood's 12th game this season where she has led Kutztown in scoring. She was 8-for-14 from the field and drained two 3-pointers.
Junior
Steph Zewe (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) (Lewistown, Pa./Indian Valley) opened the second half with a layup as she and the Golden Bears never looked back. During KU's momentous run which started with 19 minutes, eight seconds remaining, Wood scored 10 points while sophomore
Avery Hodgson (Surf City, NJ/Southern Regional) (Surf City, NJ/Southern Regional) tallied eight points, and several other Golden Bears chipped in to bring Kutztown to a 53-38 advantage with 10 minutes left to play.
“In the second half, the kids did a much better job of moving and passing the ball,” Kutztown University head coach
Janet Malouf said. “Our starters picked it up and did a very good job.”
Zewe was huge on the glass for the Golden Bears as she collected a game-high 14 rebounds. Zewe also finished with 13 points as she recorded her sixth double-double of the season.
“Steph had another good game for us today,” Malouf said. “She's rebounding the ball well and Ashley shot the ball well today after being down a few games.”
Hodgson finished with 12 points and was 6-for-8 from the field. Hodgson also collected six rebounds.
Freshman
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) (Mount Laurel, NJ/ Lenape) scored 11 points over the Wolves and is continuing to be a vital factor in KU's bench.
Despite trailing 31-26 at halftime, Kutztown turned in a great shooting performance in the first half as it shot 57.1 percent from the field. Cheyney opened up the game with back-to-back 3 pointers to set the tone. With 11:04 remaining, Zewe drove to the basket for a layup to cut CU's lead to 16-15. The Wolves clung to its lead for the remainder of the half, making it the first time in the 2011-12 season they have took an advantage at intermission.
Shanavia Thomas led Cheyney with 13 points and was 5-for-11 from the field. Aerie DeJesus finished with 12 points and a game-high six steals.
The Golden Bears return home on Saturday, Feb. 18 to face PSAC East Division leader Bloomsburg for a matchup beginning at 1 p.m. in Keystone Arena.
