KUTZTOWN, Pa. (February 13, 2012)—The Kutztown University women's basketball team will cap its three-game road series when it visits Cheyney University for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division matchup on Wednesday, Feb. 15. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Cope Hall.
The Golden Bears (6-18 overall, 4-14 PSAC) will look to rebound after dropping a 65-55 decision to Millersville University on Saturday. The Wolves (0-22 overall, 0-18 PSAC) are looking for their first win on the 2011-12 season. In its last game, Cheyney fell to Mansfield University 69-59.
KU leads the series between Cheyney 41-9 and took its latest victory over the Wolves back on Jan. 18 when it wowed fans with a 76-66 win at Keystone Arena.
The contest favors Kutztown who is averaging 62.1 points per game. The Wolves are averaging a conference-low 48.1 ppg.
Junior
Steph Zewe (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) and freshman
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) were huge for KU's backcourt in last week's conference play as the duo recorded double-doubles.
On Wednesday, Campbell led the Golden Bears with a career-high 15 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. Campbell also recorded three assists and a pair of steals and blocks over West Chester.
Zewe kept it going on Saturday against the Marauders when she led Kutztown with 17 points and ten rebounds to record her fifth double-double of the season. Nine of Zewe's boards came from the defensive end as she is second in the PSAC in defensive rebounds (7.3/game). As a team, Kutztown leads the conference in defensive rebounds (29.0/game). Zewe is third in the PSAC in rebounding (9.3/game). Against Cheyney, she grabbed a game-high 11 boards.
In KU's last game against the Wolves, junior
Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) led Kutztown with 23 points. Wood got hot early and recorded 12 of her 23 points in the first half. She was 8-for-17 from the field and finished with a team-high six assists, tying her career-high. She also grabbed a career-high seven rebounds. Wood tops KU in scoring (14.0 ppg), assists (72), and steals (32).
Sophomores
Avery Hodgson (Surf City, NJ/Southern Regional) (Surf City, NJ/Southern Regional) and
Andrea Sisson (Richmond, VA/Godwin) (Richmond, VA/Godwin) are each tallying 10.8 ppg. Sisson and Hodgson both recorded double figures in scoring against the Wolves with 14 and 12 points respectively. In the past three games, Hodgson has scored in double figures.
In its last contest with Kutztown, Cheyney's Aerie DeJesus led all scorers with 26 points and added six assists. Nadirah Brown finished with 16 points and led the Wolves in rebounding (eight). Brown currently leads Cheyney in scoring 12.8 ppg while DeJesus adds 11.6 ppg. Brown is also Cheyney's leader on the glass as she records 7.8 rebounds per game, which is fifth in the PSAC.
In Cheyney's last game, Brown scored a season high 25 points and grabbed 15 rebounds.
Kutztown will return back to Keystone Arena on Saturday, Feb. 18 for a PSAC East game against Bloomsburg University beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday's game will also serve as Senior Day for
