KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Kutztown University's
Micah Fraction (Macungie, Pa./Montrose Christian) scored 31 points as the Golden Bears notched an 83-56 win over Shippensburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action.
The Golden Bears never trailed in the contest as they held the Raiders to their second lowest point total and second lowest field goal percentage of the season.
Fraction's outburst was his most since coming to Kutztown. The junior guard hit 14-of-20 field goals in the game, including 7-of-9 in the second half as the Golden Bears pulled away. Fraction was 3-of-8 from three-point range and came within one point of KU's season-high in scoring, set three times by
Devon McBride (Richmond, Va./Hill School).
In addition Fraction and the defense, ball control was also a factor. KU held a 19-4 advantage in points off turnovers as the Golden Bears committed just six miscues on the night.
Kutztown dominated the glass in the contest, as well, outrebounding Shippensburg 48-35.
Tyler Brooks (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) led the team with 11 rebounds, while
Eric Brennan (Chester, Pa./North Catholic) grabbed 10.
McBride scored 17 points, while
Nate Edwards (Philadelphia, Pa./North Catholic) also reached double figures with 11. McBride added nine boards, while Edwards had three steals.
The Raiders were still within striking distance, trailing 56-43 with 10:22 to play before Kutztown ripped off a 13-3 run to put the game away over the next five minutes. Six different Golden Bears scored during the run.
While the offense was putting up points, the defense was stifling Shippensburg at the other end. The Raiders' Dylan Edgar was the only player on the team to reach double figures and scored only 10 points. KU limited Shippensburg's starting five to just 13-of-41 shooting as the unit combined for just 34 points. Shippensburg entered the game among the Division II leaders, shooting 50 percent as a team on the season.
The win kept Kutztown rolling as the team won its 10th straight game, the longest streak since the Golden Bears opened the 2009-10 season 14-0.
Coupled with a Bloomsburg loss to Millersville, KU now sits in sole possession of first place in the PSAC East with an 11-4 record in conference play. Kutztown has a one game lead on the Huskies and is two games up on East Stroudsburg.
Kutztown will try to keep the streak alive on February 4, when Warriors visit Keystone Arena for a 3 p.m. tip off.
