Box Score PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Kutztown University's
Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) scored her 1,000th career point as the Golden Bears stormed past the University of the Sciences 70-45.
The senior reached the plateau in the second half of the game with a jumper that built KU's lead to 48-30 with 9:16 left in the contest. Wood is the 12th player in school history to tally 1,000 career points. She finished the day with 14 points, six rebounds, three assists and four steals.
Tanejha Smith (Allentown, PA/William Allen) also continued her strong play, coming off the bench for her first career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. She went 7-of-12 shooting a notched five steals.
While Kutztown used just two reserves in the contest, Smith teamed with
Avery Hodgson (Surf City, NJ/Southern Regional) to outscore seven reserver counterparts from Sciences. Hodgson scored 10 points and grabbed seven boards.
The Golden Bears led just 17-16 with 6:46 to go in the first half, but Smith scored seven points during a 15-4 run to close the half. Behind 12 first half points from Smith, Kutztown led at the intermission 32-20.
In the second half, Jessica Sylvester pulled the Devils within six, 36-30, with a three with 12:13 to go in the game.
Arianna Apostolopoulos (Yonkers, NY/Ursuline) and
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) combined for the first eight points of a back breaking 17-3 run for Kutztown over the ensuing 5:13 to build the lead to 53-33 after two free throws by Wood.
Campbell also reached double figures for the Golden Bears with 13 points.
In addition to several big offensive efforts for KU, the defense was equally as stingy. The Golden Bears did not allow a single Devil player to score more than nine points in the game and held the starting five for Sciences to just 22 points on just 8-of-33 shooting (24 percent).
Kutztown outrebounded the Devils 48-35 and outscored the Devils in the paint 46-22.
The Golden Bears return to Keystone Arena when California (Pa.) visits for a PSAC crossover on January 4. The team then hosts IUP the following evening. Both contests are slated for 5:30 p.m. tip offs.
