Box Score PHILADELPHIA - Despite a career-high 27 points from Kutztown University junior
Tyler Brooks (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone), the University of the Sciences held off the Golden Bears 83-75 in non-conference action.
Brooks tallied his career-best on 10-of-18 from the floor, and tied tor the team lead with six boards. He was a perfect 7-of-7 from the foul line.
The Devils' answer to Brooks was Garret Kerr, who had a game high 32 points, including a three with four seconds left in regulation that sent the contest into overtime. Kerr went 11-of-16 from the field, 8-of-9 from the line, grabbed 19 rebounds, and dished out five assists. He had game-high honors in points, rebounds and assists.
KU led by two after a layup by Brooks made it 30-28 with 51 seconds to play in the first half. Sciences, with a bit of foreshadowing for the end of the second half, used a Kerr three with four seconds to go in the half to claim the 33-32 halftime advantage.
The Golden Bears appeared to break things open in the second half behind an 18-7 run that made it 60-50 after a basket by Brooks with just under seven minutes to play. After the teams traded buckets and a Tracy Peal score made it 62-52, the Devils went on a 12-2 run to tie the game on a three-point play by Kerr with one minute left in the second period.
Abdul King (Philadelphia, PA/Constitution) pulled in an offensive board on KU's next offensive possession and was fouled on the put back, allowing the Golden Bears to take a 67-64 lead with 31 seconds to go. After a layup by
Tyrone Mann-Barnes with 13 seconds remaining, Micah Fraction (Macungie, PA/Montrose Christian) was fouled and extended the lead back to three, 69-66, with just eight ticks left on the clock. The Devils responded with Kerr's triple to send the contest into overtime.
The game was tied at 73-73 with 3:19 left in the extra period after a layup by Ryan Connolly (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area), but Sciences closed with a 10-2 run to put the game out of reach.
Peal and Fraction joined Brooks in double figures with 13 points apiece. Peal hit 6-of-8 field goals and grabbed six boards. King had four steals.
Henry Messinger and Mann-Barnes also reached double figures for the Devils. Messinger had 14 points, three more than Mann-Barnes.
Kutztown shot 48 percent from the field in the game, but a dangerous outside game by the Devils kept them in the game. Sciences sank 10-of-18 threes in the contest (56 percent).
The Golden Bears will look to get back into the win column on January 4, when California (Pa.) visits Keystone Arena. Another home PSAC crossover game the next evening when IUP visits Kutztown. Both games are set to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
