Box Score KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Hannah Heeter scored a team-high 16 points and pulled down a game-high 17 boards, and four other teammates scored in double figures, as Clarion defeated Kutztown 79-67 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference women's basketball match-up on Tuesday night.
With the score tied at 54 with 11:31 remaining, Clarion went on a 15-4 run over the next 10 minutes to lead 69-58 with 1:24 left. Raven Jones scored eight of her 11 points during the stretch.
The Golden Bears, who were led by
Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) with a game-high 17 points off the bench, struggled from the field in the second half, hitting 13-of-36 (36.1 percent), including 1-of-8 (12.5 percent) from beyond the arc. The Golden Eagles outshot KU 47.5 percent to 38.0 percent for the game.
Other top scores for Clarion included Leisha Crawford (12 points) and Tania Holmes (10 points).
Kutztown had three other players hit double-figures in scoring including
Tanejha Smith (Allentown, PA/William Allen) who poured in a career-high 14 points. Smith, who picked up her first career start, continues to expand her role after tallying just 19 total points last season.
Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, PA/Northampton Area) turned in her second double-double of the year with 12 points and 11 rebounds to match her career-high on the glass.
Nicole Donahue (Wall, N.J./St. Rose) finished with 10 points.
The Golden Bears did not relinquish the lead for most of the first half, and led by as many as 10, 28-18, with 6:16 remaining. But Clarion would outscore KU over the last 5:14 of the half by a tally of 21-9 to take a 39-37 lead into halftime. Kutztown led by as many as four to open the second half, but the Golden Eagles regained the lead, 52-50 with 12:57 remaining, and never trailed again.
With the win, Clarion improves to 5-4, 2-2 in the PSAC, while the Golden Bears fall to 3-4, 2-2 in the PSAC. Kutztown will host Lock Haven in a conference match-up Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. at Keystone Hall.
