Box Score Erie, Pa. – Senior point guard
Micah Fraction (Macungie, PA/Montrose Christian) led all scorers with 28 but a balanced attack from Concord was enough to send the Kutztown University men's basketball team down to a 79-73 defeat at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center on Saturday, day two of the PSAC/WVIAC Challenge.
To go with his 28 points, Fraction also had a game-high five assists and shot 11-of-12 from the charity stripe in 37 minutes of action.
Tyler Brooks (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) scored a season-high 17 points, shooting 6-of-7 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the line.
Ryan Connolly (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) was the only other Golden Bear in double figures with 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting, including 2-for-3 from beyond the arch.
Foul trouble kept Tracy Peal from being a major factor, fouling out after 27 minutes with four points and four rebounds.
Ivory Wells (Philadelphia, PA/Imhotep Charter) put together a solid game in just 15 minutes off the bench, scoring eight points on 2-of-3 shooting from three point range and four rebounds.
The Golden Bears (0-2) had a promising start, jumping out to an early nine-point lead. KU carried the momentum and built a 12-point lead at 4:05 mark in the first on a pair of made free throws from Fraction. From there, the Mountain Lions (2-0) clawed their way back and cut the deficit to 46-42, heading into halftime.
After the break, the Maroon and Gold hung on to the lead for the first nine minutes of the second, before a three from CU's Jake Bichoff gave the Mountain Lions their first lead of the day at 58-57 with 10:41 left in regulation. In the final 10 minutes, the lead would change sides six times as Concord pulled away in the final 80 seconds to a 79-73 win.
KU was almost automatic from the foul line, hitting over 95-percent of its free throws, going 21-of-22. The Maroon and Gold also shot 51-percent from the floor as the Mountain Lions shot 42-percent.
Concord went to work all day on the glass, grabbing 13 offensive rebounds and posting a total of 28 to Kutztown's 19. The Mountain Lions turned garbage into gold, scoring nine second chance points as KU could not register any. The bench for Concord proved to be a deciding factor as it out scored KU, 34-10.
Damien Tunstalle led the Mountain Lions in scoring with 19 points including four three-pointers. Jordan Davies added 14 points and a game-high eight boards as Bichoff was the only other Concord player to reach double figures with 11.
The Golden Bears will get a few days off before hitting the road again to visit Wilmington on Wednesday night. Tip-off against the Wildcats is slated for 7:00 p.m. at the Wilmington University Sports Complex.
