EDINBORO, Pa. – After trailing the Fighting Scots 21-14 at halftime, the Kutztown University football team put up 33 unanswered points in the second half to defeat Edinboro, 47-21, at Sox Harrison Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Quarterback
Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) was 38-of-50 on the day, throwing for 369 yards and three scores.
Â
Both
Brett Fox (Laureldale, Pa./Muhlenburg) and
Zach Snyder (Lititz, PA/Warwick) benefited from Morton's afternoon as the two went for over 100 yards receiving. Fox had a game-high eight receptions for 104 yards and a touchdown which helped jump start the offense in the second half, while Snyder caught seven for 103 yards and carried once on a fake field goal for a four-yard score to put the Maroon and Gold on the board in the first quarter.
Â
The Golden Bears were nearly flawless in the second half, scoring on six consecutive drives to take a commanding lead and put the game out of reach.
Â
The game started out with the Fighting Scots jumping out to an early 14-0 lead after a 32-yard touchdown pass from Cody Harris to Ben Eisel and a 20-yard scoop and score by Alec Gluvna off a KU fumble with 3:57 left in the first quarter.
Â
On the ensuing possession, Kutztown answered. Morton hit
Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) for 15 yards, then had strikes of 19 and 17 yards to Snyder to move the Golden Bears to the Edinboro 17. It looked as though KU may have to settle for a 21-yard field goal try, but Kutztown faked and holder
Zach Snyder (Lititz, PA/Warwick) scored from four yards out to cut EU's lead in half.Â
Â
The Golden Bears tied the score on their first drive of the second quarter. Â Morton was a perfect 6-of-6 on the series before sneaking into the end zone himself on a one-yard score with 10:48 remaining in the half.
Â
With 1:14 left in the second, the Fighting Scots took over at the 20 after a
Nathan Fehr (Bernville. PA/Conrad Weiser) punt sailed into the end zone. Harris completed seven straight passes, ending with a 26-yard scoring strike for Eisel's second touchdown of the day and a 21-14 lead with 11 seconds to go before halftime.
Â
Kutztown received the kick to start the second half and tied the game after an 11-play, 78-yard march.Â
Curtis Wortham (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) rushed for 26 yards on the first play of the half to put the ball near midfield. Snyder had gains of 15 and 16 during the series before Morton hit
Kodi Reed (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) from the five yard line to knot things at 21-21 at the 10:44 mark in the third period.
Â
A 20-yard field goal by
Jack Ruggieri (West Grove, PA/Avon Grove) capped another long drive and gave the Golden Bears their first lead of the day on their next possession after going 78 yards on 12 plays.
Â
With Kutztown leading 24-21 entering the fourth period, the Edinboro went for it on fourth and 10 from their own 40 on the first play of the quarter. Seth Hembree lost six yards and the Golden Bears took over at EU's 34. KU struck quickly with Morton hitting Snyder for 16 before connecting with Fox for an 18-yard score.Â
Â
Kutztown forced the Fighting Scots to punt after a three and out and KU took over near midfield. After four straight passes to open the drive, the Golden Bears went to the ground game. Mastromatto rushed for three yards and Wortham carried the ball in from 13 yards out for a 37-21 advantage with 12:09 on the game clock.
Â
Edinboro went for it again on fourth down on its next drive, but
Zach Greenwald (Gibbstown, N.J./Paulsboro) and Sam Dixon-Dougan hauled down Harris for a four-yard loss to give the Golden Bears great field position at the EU 36. Morton later found
Shahaid Smith (Ridley, PA/Ridley) for the 10-yard score and a 44-21 lead.Â
Â
Jason Ulmer (Feasterville, PA/Neshaminy) intercepted Harris to end Edinboro's next possession and Ruggieri split the uprights for the second time in the game, this time from 40 yards for a 47-21 lead with 4:54 to go.
Â
With his three touchdowns, Morton now has 117 in his career – good for fifth in the Division II record book.Â
Â
The 100-yard days by both Snyder and Fox gave the Golden Bears three straight games with at least two different receivers with over 100 yards.Â
Â
Wortham carried the ball 17 times for 98 yards and scored once.Â
Â
Defensively, Dixon-Dougan had 13 tackles to lead Kutztown. In addition to Ulmer's interception,
English Peay (Philadelphia, Pa./George Washington) also picked off Harris once.Â
Tyrone Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) had a sack.
Â
Ruggieri extended his Division II record for consecutive extra points to 127 before it was snapped in the fourth quarter with a kick that hit the upright.
Â
Harris went 30-of45 for Edinboro for 259 yards, two scores and two interceptions. Eisel caught both touchdowns and finished with eight catches for 105 yards.Â
Â
The Golden Bear defense stifled the Fighting Scots' ground game, limiting them to just 76 yards and 2.8 yards per rush.Â
Â
James Jackson had 13 stops for EU.
Â
Kutztown wraps up its regular season on November 17 when LIU Post visits University Field for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
