Football Holds Off LIU Post on Senior Day, 14-12

SENIOR DAY PHOTOS

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Kyle Ueberroth (Cocalico, PA/Cocalico) blocked a 33-yard field goal attempt with two seconds remaining as Kutztown held off LIU Post, 14-12, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division contest.

The Golden Bears, winners of four in a row and six of their final seven, opened the scoring with 2:54 remaining in the first quarter when All-PSAC Second Team quarterback Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) hit wide out Brett Fox (Laureldale, Pa./Muhlenburg) on a 23-yard touchdown strike.  The three-play, 65-yard drive was set up by the longest run of the day, a 47-yard scamper by all-conference running back Curtis Wortham (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge).

Kutztown scored again on its next offensive possession after mounting an 11-play, 81-yard drive - its best of the day.   Starting from their own 19, the Golden Bears converted three third downs as Morton completed 8-of-9 passes, capped by a 32-yard touchdown strike to Fox.    Surprisingly, the ensuing extra point by Jack Ruggieri (West Grove, PA/Avon Grove) --- his second of the day --- would be the final point of the game for KU, the third leading scoring team in the country, entering the contest (47.6 ppg).

The Pioneers closed the gap on the very next drive, after Donovan Edwards returned Ruggieri's kickoff 35 yards to the Post 43 yard line.  Helped by two KU penalties totaling 20 yards, and a grinding rushing attack, the Pioneers scored on a one-yard sneak by wildcat quarterback Grayson Laurino.  The run capped an 11-play, 57 yard drive, however the snap on the extra point attempt sailed high, forcing an incomplete pass by Laurino.

The momentum stayed with the Pioneers in the second half as they held KU's powerful offense off the scoreboard.   It was the first time KU has been held scoreless in a half since the fifth game of the 2011 season at Shippensburg.

After a scoreless third quarter in which each team punted twice after full possessions, the fourth quarter went back and forth with each team getting the ball five times on offense.   D.J. Young's interception of a Morton pass near midfield early in the fourth and two Pioneer fumbles --- one at the KU 22 and one at the KU 6 --- thwarted any scoring efforts.

The Pioneers finally closed the gap to 14-12 with 3:53 remaining after a 7-play, 26-yard drive set up by a 21-yard punt return by Chris McGrane.   Four rushes by Anthony Brunetti totaling 15 yards, and two runs by Jeff Mack totaling seven yards set up a 3-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Heuer to Pat Fitzgerald in the right corner of the end zone.   The conversion failed, forcing Post to stop KU one more time.

Kutztown went three and out thanks to the sixth sack of the day on Morton, giving Post the ball a first and 10 at their own 40 yard line with 2:10 remaining.  The Pioneers mounted a 12-play drive to the Kutztown 16, before lining up for a 33-yard field goal attempt by Tim Sternfeld with two seconds remaining.  After three-straight timeouts by the Golden Bears, Sternfeld's kick was blocked by Ueberroth, resulting in Kutztown's seventh win and a celebration of maroon and gold on the gridiron.

It was the second-straight time KU defeated the Pioneers thanks to a late missed field goal at University Field.  KU survived a wild 50-48 matchup in 2010, when a 30-yard attempt sailed wide as time expired.

Morton completed 22-of-35 passes for 224 yards, two touchdown and two interceptions.  He finished his record breaking career with 11,612 yards (11th in NCAA Division II history) and 119 touchdown passes (fourth in NCAA Division II history).   Fox had three catches for 60 yards and two touchdowns, while Wortham carried 12 times for 70 yards.   Defensively for the Golden Bears, Jason Ulmer (Feasterville, PA/Neshaminy) led the way with 16 stops.

For LIU Post, Heuer finished with 98 yards on the ground, while going 15-of-32 for 79 yards with one touchdown and one interception.   Defensively, David Sumter had three sacks for 23 yards in losses.

The 14 points were the least amount of points KU scored in a victory since a 7-3 win over Lock Haven in the second game of the 2003 season.

The game, which was postponed from Nov.  3 due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy, was the season finale for both teams.   Kutztown finished the season 7-4, 4-3 in the PSAC East.  The Golden Bears tied for the third-most wins in school history after setting records each of the last two seasons (10 wins in 2010; 11 wins in 2011).

LIU-Post finished 3-7, and 2-5 in the PSAC East.
