Golden Bears Roll Past Millersville on Community Night

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown's high powered offense continued to fire on all cylinders, piling up 710 yards in a 59-3 win over visiting Millersville on Community Night at University Field.

The offensive explosion allowed Jack Ruggieri (West Grove, PA/Avon Grove) to etch his name into the NCAA record book.  The sophomore place kicker has made all 124 of his extra points.  His eighth and final one of the evening set the Division II record for consecutive points after touchdown.

The Golden Bears also had both two 100-yard receivers and two 100-yard rushers in the contest.

Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) was nearly flawless for the second straight week, carving up the Marauders for 344 yards and three touchdowns on 21-of-26 passing.  Brett Fox (Laureldale, Pa./Muhlenburg) caught five passes, including a 72-yard touchdown on the Golden Bears' first play from scrimmage, for 122 yards and a touchdown.  Kodi Reed (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) matched his five catches and covered 111 yards and also scored once.

The ground game was even more impressive.  Curtis Wortham (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) rumbled for 186 yards and three scores – his second straight three touchdown game – on 18 rushes.  Adrian Sterling (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg North) ran for a career-high 165 yards, including a 90-yard touchdown run that was just one-yard short of the school record.

Not to be lost in the shuffle, Kutztown's defense allowed just 218 yards of total offense, including only 65 pass yards.  Zach Greenwald (Gibbstown, N.J./Paulsboro) continued his breakout season with nine tackles, three for loss and two sacks.

The game started out with a promising opening drive by the Marauders, an 11-play march that ended with a 42-yard field goal by Garrett Mayhart with 10:48 left in the first.

From there, however, it was all Kutztown.  KU's first series started at its own 28 and Morton went for the big play on first down.  Fox got behind the MU defense, hauled in the pass and outran the defense for a 72-yard touchdown and a 7-3 lead just 15 seconds after the Marauders' field goal.

After a three and out, Wortham rushed for his first touchdown of the night, a one-yard plunge, to cap a seven-play, 53-yard drive.

MU threatened on its next series, but Mayhart's 24-yard field goal sailed wide right.

The Golden Bears utilized the big play on their next drive with Morton hitting Reed for the 38-yard strike to complete a four-play, 80-yard possession as KU jumped ahead 21-3.

Early in the second quarter, Kutztown took advantage of some of its lesser used weapons.  Fullback Justin Michalak (Dover, PA/Northeastern) caught a 25-yard pass and backup tight end Zach Yankiewicz caught a three-yard touchdown for a 28-3 lead.

Millersville pinned Kutztown deep in its own territory at the six after a 47-yard punt on a stalled drive by the Marauders.  The Golden Bears proceeded to go 94 yards on 12 plays to score for the fifth straight possession, culminating with another one-yard dive by Wortham for the 35-3 advantage.

Cody Kelso (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora (Wagner)) intercepted Sean Quarterman on Millersville's next series to put KU on offense at the Millersville 43.  Morton connected with Reed twice before Ruggieri booted a 30-yard field goal to put the Golden Bears up 38-3 at the half.

Kutztown had the ball first in the third quarter and opened the half with a 29-yard strike from Morton to Reed.  Five of KU's six plays on the series gained at least 10 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown run by Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) to put Kutztown ahead 45-3 with 11:52 to play in the quarter

The Marauders again put KU deep in its own territory with a 69-yard punt that pinned the Golden Bears at their own five.  Wortham broke off a 75-yard touchdown run as Kutztown went ahead 59-3 midway through the third.

Sterling took over at running back and after yet another Millersville punt put KU back at its own 10, he busted off a 90-yard touchdown run to end the scoring as Kutztown went ahead 59-3 at the end of the third.

Kutztown had a balanced attack offensively with 366 yards rushing and 344 yards passing.

Defensively, Cody Waltimyer (York, Pa./York Suburban) tied Greenwald for the team lead with nine stops.  Three more players – Adam Goeringer (Dallas, Pa./Dallas), Eric Condron (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) and Mike Shinkus (Frackville, PA/North Schuylkill) – all had eight tackles.  Condron had 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack.  Jamie Crawford (Reading, PA/Reading) and Ian Smith (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) each had half a sack.  Matt Connors (Mechanicsburg, PA/Trinity) had two tackles for loss among his six tackles.

For Millersville, Sean Quarterman went 9-of-18 with 64 yards and one interception.  Dan Miller finished the game at quarterback and went 2-of-3 for one yard.

Myron Miles led the Marauders with 74 yards rushing on 15 carries.

Pat Maloney and Rasheed Johnson each had nine tackles to lead MU's defense.

Kutztown stays home to face LIU Post on November 3 at 1:05 p.m.
