KU Ties IUP 1-1 on Senior Day

Box Score

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's soccer team went to two overtimes to ultimately tie with Indiana (Pa.) 1-1 on Saturday afternoon.

In a goalless first half, the Golden Bears' defense held strong to take the Crimson Hawks to half time without allowing a single shot. KU outshot IUP 12-0, and went to halftime tied 0-0.

The Golden Bears opened the second half of play with ambition; Diana Malanga (Lavallette, N.J./St. Rose) came close to scoring with a header shot in the 50th minute, saved by Crimson Hawk goalkeeper Mara Hricik who tipped the ball overtop the post.

The Golden Bears continued to challenge the Crimson Hawks for control of the offensive possession, but in the 71st minute of play, IUP broke through.

Crimson Hawk Taylor Vladic shot from five yards out and Golden Bear goalkeeper Alina Rakiewicz (Denver, PA/Cocalico) made the save but lost control of the ball. Vladic took advantage of the rebounded loose ball by taking a touch to set up teammate Tonya Fabian to score the first goal of the game for IUP at 71:40.

In retaliation, the Golden Bears rained down shots in a matter of minutes. A corner kick at the end of the 74th minute by BrieAnn Shipkowski (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) gave opportunity to teammate Malanga for a header shot at 75:30, then a shot by Samantha Busillo at 75:38, and another header by Sam Costello (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) at 75:43 before the IUP defense was able to clear the ball.

The Golden Bears did not lose hope, however, and in the 79th minute a cross from Hanna Fenstermacher (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) assisted Taylor Higgins (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) to score the first goal for KU to even up the scoreboard and end the game with a tie of 1-1.

During the first overtime, Malanga and Shipkowski each made shots on goal, but both were saved by Hricik.

IUP had two shots in the second overtime, but ultimately the time ran out with the scoreboard still reading 1-1.

The Golden Bears outshot IUP 26-7. Rakiewicz had one save to Hricik's six.

Seniors Sarah Black (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) and Shipkowski were honored before the game by their family, friends, teammates and coaches.

The Golden Bears play on the road this week when they travel to California (Pa.) for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
