Golden Bears Drop Final PSAC Crossover Game to Lock Haven, 76-66

Box Score

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (January 7, 2012)—The Kutztown University women's basketball team came up short in its final Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover game when it took a 76-66 loss to Lock Haven University, Saturday evening at Thomas Fieldhouse.

The Golden Bears (4-10 overall) slipped to 2-6 in the PSAC. The Bald Eagles (5-6 overall) improved to 4-4 in the PSAC. Saturday's game concluded the PSAC Crossover schedule that featured games between the East and West Divisions. PSAC teams will begin divisional play on Wednesday, Jan. 11.

After trailing 37-29 at halftime, Kutztown's momentum picked up and showcased a hopeful second half comeback.  Just when it seemed like the Golden Bears were closing in on the Bald Eagles to slice their lead, LHU always found a way to get out of reach.

KU slowed down Lock Haven's offense several times, but found its optimal chance when freshman Nicole Donahue (Wall, N.J./St. Rose) (Wall, NJ./ St. Rose) used a jumper to cut LHU's lead to 63-61 with two minutes remaining.

The Bald Eagles quickly fired back with a 6-0 run to give them the 70-61 advantage with 46 seconds left. However, Kutztown continued to battle and a 3-pointer from sophomore Andrea Sisson (Richmond, VA/Godwin) (Richmond, Va./ Godwin) just seconds later pulled KU within six points. Unfortunately time wasn't on KU”s side as LHU took advantage of visiting the free throw line to close out the game.

Junior Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford) finished with a game-high 18 points. Wood was 6-for-15 from the field and 5-for-6 from the line.

Junior Steph Zewe (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) (Lewistown, Pa./ Indian Valley) recorded her fourth double-double of the season. Zewe finished with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

Sisson tallied nine points, all of which were from behind the arc. Donahue and freshman Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) (Mount Laurel, NJ./ Lenape) each finished with eight points.

Peaches Nesmith scored a team-high 16 points off the bench for the Bald Eagles. Nesmith was 6-for-12 from the field and finished with three steals. Lock Haven also placed Samantha Lane and Sharay Hall in double figures in scoring. The duo added 14 points each. Hall also finished with three steals.

KU put up the first points in the first half with a pair of free throws from Wood. Lock Haven responded and jumped to an early lead, until Donahue tied the game 16-16, with a jumper with 9:36 to play. The Bald Eagles took the advantage back but with 4:21 left in the half, Sisson hit a 3-pointer to slice LHU's lead to 27-22. Nesmith swiftly answered with a 3-pointer of her own that would help carry the Bald Eagles for the remainder of the first half.

Kutztown will have a couple days to rest as it will host its first PSAC East Division contest on Wednesday, Jan. 11 against West Chester University. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Keystone Arena.
