McBride’s 32 lead Kutztown to convincing win over Lock Haven

Box Score

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Another game, another career performance for a member of the Kutztown University men's basketball team. Senior forward Devon McBride (Richmond, VA/Hill School) (Richmond, VA/Hill School) scored a career-high 32 points as KU rolled to a 75-54 win over Lock Haven University in its final Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover contest of the season.

McBride's scoring output marked the highest for a Golden Bear this season and most since Stephen Dennis' 37 against Mansfield on February 10, 2010.  25 of McBride's 32 came in the first twenty minutes as the senior made eight of his first nine shot attempts.  He finished the game shooting 12-of-17 from the field including a game-high five 3-pointers.  McBride contributed on every level for the Golden Bears Saturday night. Along with his outstanding scoring feat, he grabbed 11 rebounds breaking his career-high of seven set in KU's win over the Sciences earlier this season.

Despite playing on back-to-back nights, Kutztown (7-5, 4-4 PSAC) came out aggressive in the first half in hopes of putting away the Bald Eagles (0-11, 0-8) early.  KU shot 16-for-29 (55.2 percent) in the opening period to guide it to a thundering 43-21 halftime lead.

“I'm very happy with the way we started the game,” head coach Bernie Driscoll said.  “After a big emotional win last night, I was pleased with how we played tonight. Devon shot the ball better than he has in a long time. We had a lot of assists tonight which was a result of some great unselfish basketball.”

Three Golden Bears finished in double figures.  Junior guard Micah Fraction (Macungie, PA/Montrose Christian) followed up his career performance Friday night against Edinboro (Macungie, PA/Montrose Christian) with a 12 point effort against LHU on Saturday.  He also added a team-high five assists.  Fellow senior Eric Brennan (Chester, PA/West Catholic) (Chester, PA/West Catholic) made his homecoming after transferring from Lock Haven after the 2009-10 season with a 10-point, six-rebound outing.  Brennan is KU's top rebounder this season, averaging eight per game.

KU's starting five accounted for 69 of its 75 points.  Nate Edwards (Philadelphia, PA/North Catholic) (Philadelphia, PA/North Catholic) had nine points in the victory after playing a full 40 minutes Friday.  Sophomore Tyler Brooks (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) entered the game as the conference's most consistent shooter, and made all three of his field goals of his way to a seven-point, five-rebound night.

Kutztown won the battle of the boards against Lock Haven, 48-40.  Staying competitive on the glass and taking care of the basketball should play major factors in KU's success down the stretch.

“When things are clicking, we are a very good basketball team,” Driscoll said.  “We have had some very good guard play early on.  With our in-conference schedule now starting, I like how we are playing on both ends of the floor and strongly believe we are moving in the right direction.”

KU has won three in a row for the first time this season and can now relax on its 3-hour bus trip back to Kutztown.  The Golden Bears open their PSAC Eastern Division schedule on Wednesday, Jan. 11 against West Chester University.  Tip-off at Keystone Arena is set for 8 p.m.
