Golden Bears Return to PSAC Play with Western Swing

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's basketball team gets back to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action on January 6-7 with the final crossover contests of the 2011-12 season at Edinboro and Lock Haven.

The Golden Bears take on the Fighting Scots at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, January 6, before heading to Lock Haven for an 8:00 p.m. start on Saturday, January 7.  Fans unable to make the trip to western Pennsylvania will still be able to follow KU.  Edinboro will provide Live Stats and Streaming Audio.

Kutztown will be looking to build off of an impressive 95-72 win over the University of Sciences on December 30.  Nate Edwards (Philadelphia, PA/North Catholic) (Philadelphia, Pa./North Catholic) continued his strong play in the victory, pouring in a career-high 29 points and becoming the 22nd player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.  Over his past three contests, the senior guard is averaging 26.3 points per game.

KU turned in season-best performances against the Devils, knocking down 59 percent of its field goals and 11-of-21 threes (52 percent).

Edwards and teammate Devon McBride (Richmond, VA/Hill School) (Richmond, Va./Hill School) have given Kutztown the highest scoring duo in the PSAC this season as they combine for over 38 ppg.  The pair is also tied for fifth in the league in free throw percentage at 88 percent and is big reason why the Golden Bears shoot a Division II leading 80 percent as a team.

Edwards is fourth in the conference at 19.6 ppg after his recent hot streak.  He also averages 2.1 steals per game, good for fifth in the PSAC.  McBride, meanwhile, is sixth in the conference at 18.6 ppg and fifth with 2.6 made three-point field goals per game.  The junior is hitting a team-best 40 percent from beyond the arc (26-of-65).

Senior forward Eric Brennan (Chester, PA/West Catholic) (Chester, Pa./West Catholic) and junior guard Micah Fraction (Macungie, PA/Montrose Christian) (Macungie, Pa./Montrose Christian) give KU four players in the top 20 in the PSAC in scoring as the two players are tied at 14.0 ppg.  Brennan leads the team and is sixth in the conference at 8.1 rebounds per game.  Fraction is tied for sixth in the conference with a team-high 4.2 assists per game.

Kutztown's fifth starter is sophomore forward Tyler Brooks (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone), who leads the PSAC in field goal percentage at 72 percent and is seventh with 1.1 blocks per game.  His 5.7 rpg are second on the team.

The game at Edinboro could be a high-scoring affair as the teams rank second and third in the conference in scoring.  The Fighting Scots are second in the PSAC at 84.6 ppg, just 2.4 ppg more than the Golden Bears.

The conference's second leading scorer, Bryan Theriot leads Edinboro with 19.9 ppg on 62 percent shooting, third in the PSAC.  He also pulls down 9.0 rpg, fourth on the league's leaderboard.

Isaiah Prince is next on squad at 14.6 ppg.  He hits 87 percent from the line and 38 percent on threes to go along with a team-high 19 steals.

Cory Somerville adds 13.6 ppg on 52 percent shooting and 5.5 rpg.  He leads the team with 16 blocked shots.  Clint Nicholson has hit 41 percent of his three-point attempts on his way to 13.3 ppg.  Jay Fletcher chips in with 10.4 ppg and leads the team with 3.9 apg.

The Fighting Scots will look to get back in the win column after Ashland snapped their four-game win streak on December 30.

Lock Haven will be looking for its first win of the year as the Bald Eagles enter the weekend 0-9.

Terrell Johnson leads the team at 14.7 ppg and is efficient offensively, hitting 52 percent from the floor and 44 percent from behind the three-point line.  Johnson also leads the team and is tied for third in the PSAC at 2.1 spg.  His 23 assists are also a team-high.

Reserve Anthony Baker is the only other player on the roster in double figures at 11.1 ppg.  He is hitting 49 percent of his shots and leads the team at 4.6 rpg.

No player on Lock Haven averages 5.0 rpg as the Bald Eagles are minus-nine on the boards this season.

Armandi Marshall, shooting 56 percent from the field, is the only player on the team besides Johnson and Baker knocking down more than 42 percent overall.
