Scoring Montage helps KU Reign Supreme over Fighting Scots

Box Score

EDINBORO, Pa. – Lights-out shooting in the first half combined with a plethora of career performances helped the Kutztown University men's basketball team storm past Edinboro University, 104-84, Friday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup at McComb Fieldhouse.

The high scoring effort of overtaking the century mark notched Kutztown's highest offensive scoring total since its 105 in the regular season finale against Bloomsburg on February 28, 2009.

Kutztown (6-5, 3-4 PSAC) had three players drop more than 25 points in the victory, with four finishing in double figures.  Senior guard Nate Edwards (Philadelphia, PA/North Catholic) (Philadelphia, PA/North Catholic) led the charge, tying his career-high of 29 points he set in KU's last outing on Dec. 30 against the Sciences. He made eight of his first nine shots to account for an eye-opening 22 points in the first half.  He closed out the victory by shooting 10-for-16 from the field including a game-high five 3-pointers.  He was 4-of-5 at the charity stripe while chipping in five rebounds and four assists.  It was also Edwards' first game of the season playing all 40 minutes.

Micah Fraction (Macungie, PA/Montrose Christian) (Macungie, PA/Montrose Christian) seemed to have his breakthrough game with the Golden Bears as he picked up a career-best on the offensive end.  He scored 28 points on his game-high 11 field goals.  He made all three of his 3-point attempts as the junior point guard also grabbed five boards.

Senior guard Devon McBride (Richmond, VA/Hill School) (Richmond, VA/Hill School) rounded out the trio's scoring output with 25.  He made four 3-pointers on his way to a 10-for-18 shooting performance from the field.  McBride made his presence known on the boards against the Fighting Scots, pulling down a career-best seven rebounds.

The Golden Bears played with a strong sense of urgency Friday night, opening up on a 15-4 run.  Eric Brennan (Chester, PA/West Catholic) (Chester, PA/West Catholic) was the adhesive of the offense heading forward as the senior contributed in nearly every way.  For the second straight game, Brennan found himself within grasp of a triple-double. He finished with 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds and seven assists to help KU not only set the tempo early, but keep it in its favor throughout the game.  Brennan and the Golden Bears kept their foot on the throttle down the stretch as they compiled a 14-0 run late in the first half, extending the lead to 21 at break.

Tyler Brooks (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) has continued to prosper in his starting role by helping KU gain momentum on both ends of the floor. The sophomore had a career-high four blocks against EU while bringing down four rebounds and four assists.

Edinboro (6-5, 4-3) was led by Clint Nicholson who dropped 24 points to go along with nine rebounds.  Also scoring in double figures was Bryan Theriot with 20 and Cory Somerville with 12.  Jay Fletcher helped pace the Fighting Scots with his team-high five assists.

KU shot 55.6 percent from the field Friday night, its second-highest of the season.  Edwards, McBride and Fraction accounted for all of KU's long-range buckets as it finished 12-for-20 from 3-point range.  The top free-throw shooting team in Division II did not get to the line as much as it has in previous games, but was still able to convert on 12-of-16 attempts.

The Golden Bears have now won two in a row and three of their last four as they eye a chance at .500 in the conference tomorrow evening.  KU makes the trip to Lock Haven on Saturday, Jan. 7 for a PSAC matchup beginning at 8 p.m.
