KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Coming off its biggest win of the season, the Kutztown University men's basketball team is loaded with confidence and feels it has a strong chance to extend its season-long, five game winning streak. The Cheyney Wolves come to town on Wednesday, Jan. 18 for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division contest at Keystone Arena set to tip at 8 p.m.
Fans not able to make the trip to Keystone Arena can still follow the game via

The Golden Bears (9-5 overall, 6-4 PSAC) have won both of their Eastern Division matchups and currently sit two games behind first-place Bloomsburg in the East. The Wolves (2-11, 1-9) have had some troubles in the first half of their season, but come to Kutztown hoping to take advantage of some previous success they have had against KU.
After opening conference play with a 5-0 record last season, KU suffered its first loss to the Wolves as Cheyney came out on top, 86-72. A
Tamir Johnson (Philadelphia, PA/Imhotep Charter) layup with two seconds to go lifted KU to an 82-80 win at home last season, snapping a three-game skid against Cheyney. The Wolves also ended KU's 25-game homecourt winning streak in the 2009-10 season with a lopsided 94-62 victory.
Kutztown will look to put the past in the past on Wednesday as it has a chance to extend its winning streak to six, the longest since its 14-0 start to the 2009-10 season. KU is currently averaging over 87 points per game during its winning streak and will look to stay aggressive on both ends of the floor after an impressive showing Saturday at East Stroudsburg. Full court pressure and holding ESU to 30.3 percent shooting helped guide KU to a 75-61 win over the Warriors, its largest margin of victory over ESU since the 2008-09 campaign.
The top scoring team in the East (83.1) has seen outstanding play from its entire roster as of late. A KU senior has been named Athlete of the Week in three of the last five weeks with the most recent recipient being
Eric Brennan (Chester, PA/West Catholic) (Chester, PA/West Catholic). An 18-rebound performance against ESU and nearly averaging a triple-double in the past two games has made Brennan one of the best all-around players in the conference. He is fifth in the PSAC and second in the East in rebounding (9.0) while chipping in 13.6 points and 3.6 assists per game. Brennan leads KU with six double-doubles this season.
Heading the offensive charge in scoring has been the duo of
Devon McBride (Richmond, VA/Hill School) (Richmond, VA/Hill School) and
Nate Edwards (Philadelphia, PA/North Catholic) (Philadelphia, PA/North Catholic). The twosome combines for 38.2 points per game, the top pair in the PSAC. McBride's 19.6 per clip are second in the PSAC as Edwards is fifth with 18.6. They are first and second, respectively, in the East. They have also helped KU become the second-best free throw shooting team in the PSAC at 77.8 percent (Edwards, .854: McBride, .848).
Junior guard
Micah Fraction (Macungie, PA/Montrose Christian) (Macungie, PA/Montrose Christian) had a game-high 20 points in the win over ESU and has scored in double figures the last five games. He averages 15.6 points per game and is ninth in the PSAC in assists (4.1).
Kutztown has also begun to see quality minutes from some of its freshman off the bench.
Demerik Weglinski (Reading, PA/Reading) (Reading, PA/Reading),
Abdul King (Philadelphia, PA/Constitution) (Philadelphia, PA/Constitution),
Kenny Battle (Philadelphia, PA/Imhotep Charter) (Philadelphia, PA/Imhotep), and
Mike John (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg North) (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg North) have made up KU's second unit and have had increased production the past two weeks. Just this past weekend against ESU, Weglinski grabbed a career-high eight rebounds in the victory. Battle also notched a career-best with five points.
Cheyney will make its sixth road trip in its last seven games on Wednesday. It's coming off a tough, 78-76, loss to Millersville on Monday as four Wolves finished in double figures. Junior Jason Sabb netted 29 and is sixth in the conference in scoring (17.7). Like KU, Cheyney has its own set of top scorers. Senior Brandon Baylor is averaging 17.2 points per game as the duo accounts for 34.9 of CU's 67.4 points per game.
The Wolves have done a great job thus far at shutting down the perimeter game. They are the best team in the East at defending the 3-pointer (.294). A deciding factor on Wednesday could come on the glass. Headed by Brennan, KU is fifth in the East in rebounding margin (+0.2). Cheyney is last in the PSAC at -11.9 as Rashaad Slappy leads the team in rebounding at 6.2 per game.
Both teams will play on their home floor after Wednesday's showdown. KU hosts Millersville at Keystone Arena and Cheyney will take on Mansfield at Cope Hall on Saturday, Jan. 21. Both games are set to tip at 3 p.m.
