Hot Outside Shooting Not Enough Against ESU

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - Kutztown hit 47 percent from three-point range, but East Stroudsburg came from behind to defeat the Golden Bears 62-55.

Kutztown (4-12, 2-8 PSAC) had trailed for just a total of 28 seconds until the Warriors' Andrea Veres hit a three with 11:58 to play that made it 41-39 in favor of ESU.  Andrea Sisson (Richmond, VA/Godwin) (Richmond, Va./Godwin) tied the game at 42-42 on a three of her own just over a minute later, but Steph Cabald anwered for the Warriors with a long range jumper for a three-point advantage with 9:26 to go.

While East Stroudsburg (6-8, 3-7 PSAC) led for the remainder of the contest, KU stayed within reach, keeping it at a one or two possession game until the final minute when the Golden Bears were forced to foul.

The two squads combined to hit 16-of-32 threes in the contest (50 percent), but were ice cold from inside the arc, where they went 23-of-76 (30 percent).  

Kutztown shot 36 percent overall in the contest, one percentage point lower than the Warriors.

While the shooting stats were similar and both teams had 19 turnovers, ESU was awarded 32 free throws in the contest compared to just seven for the Golden Bears.  The Warriors attempted 21 free throws in the second half, while KU did not go to the line in the final 20 minutes of play. ESU converted just 18 of their foul shots in the game to finish at 56 percent.  

Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford) led Kutztown with 17 points.  She went 4-of-6 from long range and had three assists and two steals in 39 minutes of action.  Steph Zewe (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) (Lewistown, Pa./Indian Valley) played all 40 minutes and grabbd a team-high nine rebounds to go along with three steals. 

Veres scored a game-high 22 points for the Warriors.  She went 6-of-8 from the floor, 4-of-5 behind the arc and 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.  East Stroudsburg needed her scoring on a day in which KU held the Warriors' leading scorers Cyara Woodridge and Jessica Martin to a combined 4-of-17 shooting and 13 total points.

Fayola Moise led all players with 15 rebounds.

Kutztown will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday, January 18, when Cheyney visits Keystone Arena at 6 p.m.
