KU Opens PSAC East Division Against West Chester

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (January 10, 2012)—The Kutztown University women's basketball team will open up its divisional conference schedule when it hosts West Chester University on Wednesday, Jan. 11 for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division contest at Keystone Arena. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.

For fans not able to watch the game at Keystone Arena, you can follow the game via LIVE STATS.

As Kutztown embarks on the second half of its season, it has the opportunity to reflect and alter some things and progress into a notable opponent. The Golden Bears (4-10 overall) will enter Wednesday's contest with a 2-6 record in the PSAC. After facing a tough PSAC crossover schedule that featured Kutztown playing all eight teams in the West Division, it will have to put those games in the past and focus on the challenge ahead.

The Golden Bears were picked fourth in the 2011 PSAC East Division Preseason Coaches' Poll behind West Chester who was picked to finish third. The Golden Rams also received one first place vote.

West Chester (9-3 overall, 5-3 PSAC) is currently in a three-way tie for first in the PSAC East, while Bloomsburg University (11-3 overall) and Millersville University (8-4 overall) all hold 5-3 records in the East. The Huskies were the favorite of the coaches in the East as they received five first place votes to top last year's favorite, Millersville, which received two first place votes in the poll.

Kutztown who is third in the PSAC East has used efforts from most of it players, but is led by junior Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) (Limerick, PA./ Spring-Ford) and sophomore Andrea Sisson (Richmond, VA/Godwin) (Richmond, VA./ Godwin).

Wood is tabbing 14.6 points/game which is 10th in the PSAC. Wood who has tremendous ability at handling and distributing the ball also leads KU in assists (39) and steals (17).

Sisson is also averaging double figures in scoring for the Golden Bears. Sisson is averaging 12.1 points a game and continues to be a consistent outside shooter for Kutztown.  Sisson is ranked 13th in Division II for three-point field goal percentage (45.2).  She has made 38 3-pointers this season, which is just one shy of 10th on the KU single season record.

Sophomore Avery Hodgson (Surf City, NJ/Southern Regional) (Surf City, NJ./ Southern Regional) and junior Steph Zewe (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) (Lewiston, PA./ Indian Valley) have also been valuable to the Golden Bears in the frontcourt.

Hodgson leads the team in blocks (18) and is averaging 9.4 points/game.  Additionally, Hodgson's steadiness on the free throw line ranks 11th in Division II as she yields a 91.7 free throw percentage, which also tops the PSAC.

Zewe has been an impeccable player down low for Kutztown. Her toughness reflects why she's the top defensive rebounder in the PSAC, averaging 6.9/game.

The Golden Bears have also relied heavily on its bench throughout the season, which has helped KU become a better team.

West Chester is led by three players who are averaging double figures in scoring. Allison Hostetter leads WCU in scoring (14.9/game), which is eighth in the PSAC. Hostetter is shooting 51.4 percent from the field and leads the Golden Rams in steals (28).

Alex Lennon, who was recently named this week's PSAC East Athlete of the Week, is averaging 13.4 points/game. Lennon is also a threat defensively as she leads WCU in rebounds (89) and blocks (32). Additionally, Lennon is shooting 57.4 percent from the field, which is second in the PSAC.

Ambreelinne Ortman and Jillian Keefer are each solid players in the WCU lineup. The duo combines its offensive and defensive skills for a lethal weapon for opponents.

Kutztown will return back to action when it travels to East Stroudsburg on Saturday, Jan. 14 for a PSAC East game beginning at 1 p.m.
