No.8 Kutztown falls to No. 3 Shippensburg, 5-1 in second half surge

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (September 30, 2011)—The Kutztown University women's field hockey team dropped a 5-1 decision to Shippensburg University in a non-conference game on Friday afternoon at University Field. (BOXSCORE)

The Golden Bears (6-3 overall) are ranked eighth in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Top 10 poll. The Red Raiders are ranked third and improved to 9-2 overall.

Kutztown got on top early in the first half when junior Jenna Gregory (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) scored her eighth goal of the season in the 10th minute of the game.

Gregory has been the driving factor behind KU's offense this season. Her dedication and desire to contribute to the Golden Bears is one of the reasons that she leads the team in goals this season.

Shippensburg responded with a goal from Taylor Jones assisted by Bre White. The Red Raiders took the lead before halftime when White scored off a penalty stroke.

Shippensburg's offense continued to press Kutztown's defense in the second half. The Red Raiders took control of the second half by scoring three goals to push the game out of KU's reach. White scored another goal in the second half, along with two goals from Kristina Taylor. Taylor's goals were assisted by Katie Pufnock and Lauren Taylor.

Goalies Karly Waltman (Birdsboro, PA/Twin Valley) and Emily Falko (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua) each saw time in the box for KU. Waltman recorded two saves in the first half. Falko had one save in the second half.

The Golden Bears will turn around and host Mansfield University for a non-conference game on Saturday, Oct. 1. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at University Field.
