Borland shines with four goals in KU's win over Concord

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (September 3, 2011)—Junior Maria Borland (Hagerstown, MD/Hagerstown) was beyond amazing in the Kutztown University women's soccer season-opener against Concord University on Saturday afternoon at North Campus Field. The Golden Bears defeated the Lions 6-0. (Boxscore)

Most athletes are nervous before the start of any new season or even before each game. The fearless Borland came ready to play as she recorded four goals. Three of her goals were in the first period but she didn't do it alone.

Freshman Bella Jaffin (Nescopeck, PA/Berwick Area) had two assists on Borland's goals. The duo whose chemistry was present on the field had an encore presentation after Borland scored her second goal in the 42nd minute. Just two minutes later, the pair gave a repeat performance on Borland's third goal.

“We've been working a lot on pattern plays,” Borland said. “Bella really did most of the work on those goals, so I give her the credit.”

“In practice we work on quick passes and getting to the end line,” Jaffin said. “We just try to the get the ball on goal for someone else to shoot and Maria just made it happen.”

Borland and Jaffin weren't the only ones making things happen for Kutztown. Newcomer Janine Valerio (Washington Township, NJ/Washington Township) initiated the scoring drive in the 21st minute. Her goal was assisted by freshman Hanna Fenstermacher (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove). Fenstermacher recorded another assist on Borland's first goal in the 24th minute.

Junior Stephanie Borland (Hagerstown, MD/Hagerstown) also joined in on the action when she scored in the 80th minute.

Defensively KU held Concord to three shots the entire game. As a team, Kutztown tallied 35 shot attempts.

While the delight of winning the season-opener is a great feeling for the Golden Bears, they know that they have more work to do. Many of Kutztown's new faces saw playing time in the season debut. As the season progresses, they'll continue to work out the kinks of what seems to be a very promising future for KU.

The Golden Bears will return to action on Monday, Sept.5 to host Rollins University. The game will begin at noon on North Campus Field.

“Our speed of play has to be faster against Rollins,” Borland said. “We have to come out harder especially in the first half.”
