SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Kutztown University football team hit what will hopefully be a minor bump in the road in its quest towards a conference title Saturday afternoon. KU suffered a 49-7 defeat at the hands of Shippensburg University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game from Seth Grove Stadium.
The Golden Bears (4-1 overall, 1-1 PSAC East) entered Saturday's contest ranked 12th in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II top 25 poll. KU is also ranked 13th by d2football.com.
Senior running back
Robbie Frey (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton) totaled 199 all-purpose yards and has proven to be a complete player for KU. The transfer from Connecticut ran for 109 yards on 15 carries, including a 61-yard touchdown scamper early in the third quarter. Frey broke his own record of longest run this season for Kutztown, previously set on Sept. 3 against Saint Anselm (42).
This is the third time Frey has rushed for over 100 yards this season. He leads KU with six touchdowns on the ground while averaging 105.6 yards a game.
Quarterback
Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) threw for 124 yards on 12-for-30 passing against SU. The junior hasn't been held without a touchdown many times throughout his career. Saturday's performance snapped a 21-game streak of throwing at least one touchdown pass. He tied the record last week with his four TD outing against Cheyney.
Morton connected with six different receivers.
Josh Smith (West Lawn, PA/Wilson) led KU with 43 yards, with
Erik Frazier (Philadelphia, PA/Germantown) and
Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) hauling in 29 and 27, respectively.
Alex DiNolfi (Norristown, PA/Norristown) and
Andrew Hodges (Ridley, PA/Ridley) each had a career-high 13 tackles.
English Peay (Philadelphia, Pa./George Washington) and
Jason Ulmer (Feasterville, PA/Neshaminy) each contributed nine tackles.
Shippensburg (3-2, 1-1) got on the board early in the first quarter, capitalizing off a Morton fumble in Kutztown territory. Quarterback Zach Zulli led the Raiders with 215 yards through the air on 21-for-30 passing. He tossed four touchdown passes to three different receivers. Bryan Barley was the primary target for Zulli, bringing in 129 yards and a score on five catches.
Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) accumulated 155 all-purpose yards on the afternoon, with 111 coming on kickoffs. The duo of Mastromatto and Frey has greatly contributed to a KU rushing attack ranked second in the PSAC entering the weekend.
Kutztown looks to return to its winning fashion next weekend as it hosts East Stroudsburg on Oct. 8. Kickoff is set for 1:05 p.m.
