Kissling smiles big in KU's 3-0 win over USP

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (September 2, 2011)—Senior Erin Kissling (York, PA/Central York) is the epitome of what any coach or player would love to have on their team. Her teammates are proud to call her more than just a teammate, but a friend and mentor. Not only is she fun, enthusiastic, and sweet, her athleticism is just one more characteristic that makes her a well-rounded individual.

Kissling led the Kutztown University volleyball team to a 3-0 victory against the University of the Sciences earlier Friday evening at the KU Classic in Keystone Arena.

The Golden Bears (3-0 overall) defeated the Devils (0-1 overall) 25-15, 25-22, and 25-13.

Kissling had a team-high 11 kills and finished with nine digs. As a team KU recorded 36 kills. Even though Kissling thought Kutztown struggled a bit to get the ball moving, she still wore a smile the entire game.

“It wasn't any easy game but we got it done,” Kissling said. “I always try to smile wherever I am. I love my teammates to death, they make me so happy. They're great to be around.”

During the pregame, fans experienced the KU volleyball team in action as the girls danced to various tunes, oldies and newbies. Fans applauded and shared laughs at the comical yet fun Golden Bears. Just by watching how the team interacts, you can truly tell that these girls love the game and love playing it together.

Senior Lindsey Smith (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) led the Golden Bears in digs with 12. Junior Dana Wright (Warminster, PA/Saint Basil Academy) recorded 15 assists, and junior Kimberlee Gomber (Washington, PA/Washington) finished with 13 assists.

While Kutztown's starters have had time to adjust to one another, they are also making sure that the underclassmen are adjusting to the KU volleyball family.

“The new girls are awesome,” Kissling said. “They always push us in practice and we all try to serve as a mentor to them.”

The Golden Bears will have to continue pushing in order to win Saturday's games. Kutztown will conclude the KU Classic by facing Stonehill College at 10 a.m. and C.W. Post at 6 p.m.

“We have to be focused tomorrow,” Kissling said. “Today we played up and down so we need to concentrate on stability and pass well so we can run our offense.”
